The Allentown Department of Public Works is announcing the fall leaf collection schedule.

District by district street cleaning of leaves begins in earnest on Monday, October 26.

Residents are reminded to try to keep the piles about a foot away from the curb and to make sure there are no branches, rocks, or debris in the piles.  Residents are asked to keep nearby inlet or catch basin grates free of debris.

During leaf season, city crews go through each district twice with front-end loaders, sweepers and leaf suckers.  Leaves raked out to the street after crews have gone by will not be picked up until the next time crews are scheduled in that district.

After each district is gone through twice for leaf pickup, crews will go through again with the sweepers for a final sweep. After the final sweep is accomplished in a district, no leaves are to be put into the street in that area.

After the final sweep has been completed, all residents are urged to place their leaves in plastic bags for pick-up by the Streets Department. Residents must put their bags at the curb and call the Bureau of Streets at 610-437-7638 to schedule collection. Please allow a few days for pick-up of bagged leaves. Collection is for leaves only. Bags that have a mixture of leaves and garbage will not be picked-up.

The Streets Bureau removed nearly 16,0000 cubic yards of leaves last season.
