“My classes are interactive and yes, fun.. The subject matter is serious but people learn better in a relaxed environment. Many times I have had a student say to me after class, “I was anxious when I came into class, but you made me feel relaxed.” I take the time to get to know my students background (work, life experience) so that I can address the needs of my students.

I am aware that in today’s world, people don’t have time to sit in a classroom for several hours or time to drive miles away from their homes to attend class. I offer shorter class times and I travel to the group or the organizations location to teach the class. I also have community classes in the Lehigh Valley. Another option for taking the class with me is the new blended learning option. This option blends an online learning portion and a short skills session. This enables the learner to take the class in their own time frame.

I have been teaching adult learners in my role as an educator for a mental health organization for 8+ years. From that experience, I gained knowledge of how an adult learner absorbs knowledge and motivates them to learn. Three years ago, I decided to branch out on my own and start Barber CPR + First Aid training. I understand that people learn in different ways but I have found that most people learn best through experiential learning. I encourage my learners to be active participants in discussions and we practice until everyone feels confident with their skill set. I am most proud when a student tells me that they were able to save someone after taking my class. I recently had a student tell me that she had saved her grandmother who was having a choking emergency.

I have a Bachelor of Science degree in Industrial and Organizational Psychology. I am a mental health educator for a local non-profit organization as well as a Certified American Red Cross CPR and First Aid Instructor. My passion for teaching comes from a proactive perspective. From my 8+ years of experience in the field of mental health, I know that disease is a by product of past traumatic experiences. Stress, adversity and trauma have a direct impact on a persons health. The CDC-Kaiser Permanente Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACE) Study is one of the largest investigations of accumulative childhood stress and later-life health and well-being. The ACE score, a total sum of the different categories of ACEs reported by participants, is used to assess cumulative childhood stress. Study findings repeatedly reveal a graded dose-response relationship between ACEs and negative health and well-being outcomes across the life course. With that in mind, is it any wonder that heart disease is the #1 cause of death? Stress, adversity and traumatic experience is universal. Knowledge is power. Become empowered…Know what to do if you or your loved one is experiencing a health emergency.

For more information of the ACE Study go to: http://www.cdc.gov/violenceprevention/acestudy/about.html

In the future, I would like to develop wellness workshops. I want to teach people how trauma, stress and adversity impacts our lives and what we can do to manage the negative effects. My primary goal right now, is to encourage everyone to learn CPR. I want to empower others with the knowledge and skills to know what to do in an emergency situation. I encourage everyone; individuals, parents, students, schools, universities, organizations and corporations to invest in themselves and their employees and learn this life-saving skill. Biggest challenge? The mindset of “it won’t happen to me”….. it might never happen to you.. but know what to do if it does! I do this work from my heart. I want better outcomes for you and the people you love and care about. We can’t know what the future holds but we can be prepare.

Contact me to find out how I can help you with your learning needs and goals.”
