Lower Macungie Fire Department is currently accepting aplications for Firefighter I / Basic Fire Academy



For the fifth year in a row, Lower Macungie Fire Department and Bucks County Community College will run a local Firefighter I / Basic Fire Academy program . The program is open to members of Lehigh Valley area volunteer fire departments. Offering the course in the Lehigh Valley gives volunteers the ability to be nationally certified as firefighters without having to travel out of the county to get this necessary training. Firefighter I National Certification (NFPA 1001)/Bucks Basic Fire Academy

Description:  This course provides instruction to the student in basic fire fighting skills necessary to function as a responding member of a fire department.  The following topics will be covered in this program:

Building Construction, Fire Behavior, Fire Extinguisher, Fire Hose & Streams, Forcible Entry, Ladders, Personal Safety Equipment, Ropes & Knots, Safety, SCBA, Search & Rescue, Vehicle Fires, Ventilation, Water Supply, and Wildland Fires.

This course is presented in 7 sections:

  1. Bucks Basic Fire Academy
  2. Hazmat Awareness Training (Age 14 and up) and National Certification Testing
  3. Basic First Aid
  4. Healthcare Provider CPR
  5. Hazmat Operational Level Training (Age 16 and up) and National Certification Testing
  6. Structural Burn Session (Age 18 and up)
  7. Firefighter 1 National Certification Testing (Age 18 and up)

Students MUST pre-register by completing the attached BCPSTC application form and faxing it to LMFD at 610.398.1526. The course/section number is FSC-0913-002.  When pre-registering for this course, students will be placed in all of the course sections that their age allows, unless it is clearly indicated that they are not taking part in certain modules.  There is a written final exam for everyone in the course.  Students over 18 years of age will take the Firefighter 1 National Certification Exam.  Ages 14 to 17 years old will test for Bucks County Basic Fire Academy Course.  This course requires published textbooks that are the students’ responsibility to purchase and bring to class the first night.  See below for book information.

Prerequisites:                      Age 14 and up

Required Textbooks:         IFSTA Essentials of Firefighting 6th Edition                                                                                                                                                                  Jones & Bartlett, Hazardous Materials Awareness and Operations

Required Equipment:        Turn out gear, SCBA, and textbooks

Cost of course:                    $325.00 (includes certification testing) – Billed from Bucks County Community College

$100.00 (course related expenditures like propane, plywood, cascade and other things for the class, including cadet t-shirts to be worn during class) – $100 Check payable to Lower Macungie Fire Dept. due no later than 01/03/15.  Failure to submit payment will result in student being unable to continue with class.
