CITY OF ALLENTOWN BUREAU OF RECYCLING AND SOLID WASTE – EARTH DAY 2015

CITY OF ALLENTOWN

BUREAU OF RECYCLING AND SOLID WASTE

EARTH DAY 2015

Today, April 22, is Earth Day, and it has a special significance in Allentown.  We began our successful and award winning curbside recycling program on Earth Day 1990.

Over the last 25 years we have seen tremendous growth in our programs. This includes the expansion of materials collected at the curb and the Allentown Recycling Drop-Off Center.  The City has begun a public space recycling program to increase recycling on City sidewalks and in our parks and continues to expand this program.  The City has invested in a yard waste recycling program to process yard waste and Christmas trees into mulch for use in city parks and for our residents and most recently, the recycling of televisions, computers and other electronics.  The City is grateful to the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection for receiving grant funding through the years to support these initiatives and programs.

The Bureau of Recycling and Solid Waste continues to be recognized by the Pennsylvania Waste Watchers program for its recycling, waste reduction, reuse, and composting programs.  In 2014, Allentown was one of more than 100 municipalities, counties, private businesses, individuals, and community organizations from throughout Pennsylvania to be recognized for going above and beyond what is mandated under Act 101 for their communities or programs.

Allentown received this award for the Expanded Electronics Recycling Program in response to the 2013 Pennsylvania state law banning computers, their peripherals and TVs from landfills.  The City of Allentown Bureau of Recycling & Solid Waste began offering more opportunities to recycle electronic devices and offers twice a month recycling events for its residents.  For more information please call 610-473-8729 or visit www.allentownpa.gov.

On behalf of Mayor Ed Pawlowski and the Bureau of Recycling and Solid Waste, Happy Earth Day and thanks for keeping Allentown Clean & Green.
