Habitat Lehigh Valley and United Youth Party beautify Allentown on June 13

WHAT: Beautify the Blocks Block Party

WHEN: Saturday, June 13 from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m.

WHERE: Liberty Street between 4th & 5th Street, Allentown

Allentown, June 10, 2015 – Habitat for Humanity of the Lehigh Valley has partnered with United Youth Party to beautify the blocks between 4th and 5th on Liberty Street.

Liberty Street, between 4th and 5th in Allentown will be closed to traffic while United Youth Party, Habitat for Humanity Lehigh Valley volunteers and an expected 600 residents from Allentown beautify 13 properties.  Work will include general landscaping, such as laying natural stone borders, putting down top soil, mulching, planting flowers and installing lighting.

United Youth Party was founded in 2011 by a group of students attending Roberto Clemente Charter School.  The members have a vision to improve Allentown and the lives of all its citizens by solving the social issues that plague the city.  Through their work, they are able to present effective ways in which citizens can empower their ideas and express solutions.

This particular project will not only benefit 13 households, it will also promote community awareness and involvement, as well as beautify and lift the whole block. This project falls in line with Habitat for Humanity of the Lehigh Valley’s A Brush With Kindness program, which focuses on minor exterior home repairs in the target neighborhoods of Jordan Heights and Promise Neighborhood.

Habitat for Humanity’s mission is to provide affordable housing for hardworking low-income families. Homeowners commit to 250 hours of “sweat equity” to be eligible for a Habitat home.  Partner families repay a no-interest mortgage as part of Habitat’s philosophy of giving potential homeowners a “hand up” instead of a “hand out.”

Since 1989, Habitat has built and renovated over 100 homes in the Lehigh Valley and dedicated its 100th home last year.  Contact Habitat Lehigh Valley at 610-776-7737 for additional information or explore its initiatives by visiting the website at http://www.habitatlv.org/.
