Lehigh Valley Writing Project to Host Annual Conference



 

 

CENTER VALLEY, Pa. (Dec. 11, 2018) – The Lehigh Valley Writing Project (LVWP) will host its annual “Best Practices in Teaching Conference: Make Learning” from 7:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 23, 2019, at the Penn State Lehigh Valley campus in Center Valley.

The conference will feature interactive workshops and presentations for teachers to share professional teaching practices. Angela Stockman will be this year’s keynote speaker.

A free virtual book club leading up to Best Practices will be held starting in January. It focuses on Stockman’s book “Make Writing: 5 Strategies that Turn Writer’s Workshop into a Makerspace” (which is available at the Penn State Lehigh Valley bookstore for 10 percent off cover price). Stockman is the author of “Make Writing: 5 Strategies that Turn Writer’s Workshop into a Makerspace,” “Hacking the Writing Workshop: Redesign with Making in Mind,” and “Hacking School Culture: Creating Compassionate Classrooms.” In her former life, she taught elementary, middle and high school English Language Arts. During her tenure, she served as a Christa McAuliffe Fellow and won a citation for Excellence in Teaching from the New York State Department of Education, specifically for her work with resistant learners. For the last fourteen years, Stockman has supported literacy teachers throughout the United States, Canada and Australia as they work to engage and sustain writers of all ages and ability levels. She has expertise in K-12 curriculum and assessment design, and she has served as an instructional coach for teachers at all levels. The founder of the WNY Young Writers’ Studio, Stockman also establishes and helps others sustain makerspaces for writers within and beyond their school systems.

The cost of the conference is $65. An early bird rate of $55 is available until Dec. 31, 2018. For Lehigh Valley Writing Project Fellows, the conference cost is $45. Registration includes a continental breakfast and lunch. Prepaid registration is required.
