The Hillside School 2015-2016 Speaker Series



 

Join us on Wednesday, October 7th as Dr. Brook Sawyer and Dr. Julie Santoro share their research in the areas of developing language and early literacy.  Strategies for promoting early reading development will be modeled for parents, educators, and other professionals who attend.

Brook Sawyer, Ph.D., holds a doctorate in educational psychology. Her primary research focuses on supporting and enhancing the practices of teachers and parents to promote the language and literacy development of young children, including children who are typically developing, children with disabilities, and dual language learners.

Julie Santoro, Ph.D., holds a doctorate in special education and is currently a research scientist at Lehigh University. Santoro is a former speech -language pathologist who worked in clinical and special educational settings servicing children in preschool through high school.Sawyer and Santoro, with colleagues at The Ohio State University, are currently engaged in a 3.5 million dollar federal grant; the aim of which is to determine the effectiveness of supplemental language and literacy curriculum for young children with disabilities.

Impact of ADHD on Executive Functioning
By Dr. George DuPaul
The association of attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and deficits in executive functioning will be described. Effective school-based interventions for children and adolescents with ADHD will be discussed including behavioral strategies, academic support, home-school communication, and self-regulation approaches.
