Cartwright Announces Northampton County Student Accepted to the U.S. Naval Academy

Easton, PA – Today, U.S. Representative Matt Cartwright announced that Easton Area High School student, Joseph Ozgar, has been accepted to the United States Naval Academy at Annapolis, MD. Rep. Cartwright proudly nominated Joseph to attend the academy where he will begin his service career.

Joseph is a graduate of Easton Area High School and the son of Gregory Ozgar and Michele Ozgar. While attending Easton Area High School, Joseph was a member of the National Honor Society and the Tri-M Music Honor Society and captain of both the track and cross-country teams. Joseph also received the Dwight D. Eisenhower Leadership Award.

“Each year, I have the distinct honor of nominating students from our Congressional District to our nation’s military academies,” said Rep. Cartwright. “To be nominated, students must not only excel academically, but also exhibit a passion for service and leadership. Joseph is a well-rounded, bright young man and a role model for his peers; I am so proud of his hard work, perseverance, and acceptance into the Naval Academy.”

In order to attend one of the military academies, students must receive a nomination from their Member of Congress. Students may apply to the U.S. Military Academy (West Point), the Air Force Academy, the Naval Academy, and the Merchant Marine

Academy. Accepted students will receive a full scholarship and upon graduation, must complete the military service requirement for each school.

Rep. Cartwright added, “Throughout our nation’s history, U.S. Service Academies have been instrumental in preparing young people for service to our country as commissioned officers. As a Pennsylvanian, I am proud of our patriotic young men and women who are willing to step forward and answer the call of duty. It is an honor to play a role in preparing our next generation of leaders.”

Congressman Matt Cartwright is a member of House Democratic Leadership and the House Committee on Appropriations. He serves as Vice Chair of the Commerce- Justice-Science Subcommittee and is a member of Financial Services & General Government and Military Construction-VA Appropriations Subcommittees. He also serves on the Committee on Natural Resources. Pennsylvania’s 8th Congressional District includes Lackawanna, Wayne, and Pike Counties and portions of Luzerne and Monroe Counties.
