The Allentown Police Department is proud to announce the first-ever Senior Citizens Police Academy.

The program is designed to educate senior citizens not only on the operations of the Allentown Police Department, but how to recognize scams and fraud affecting senior citizens today.

The Senior Citizens Police Academy will take place on Monday evenings from 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. from November 11, 2019 to December 2, 2019. The academy classes will be held at Lehigh Valley Active Life located at 1633 West Elm Street.

The application process for the 2019 Senior Citizen’s Police Academy (for those age 65 and older) will open Tuesday, October 1, 2019 and will be accepted until 3:00 p.m. on Tuesday, October 15, 2019.

Mayor Ray O’Connell said, “This is a tremendous learning opportunity for our seniors. They are too often the victim of fraud at the front door of their home and over the phone. I applaud the effort of the Allentown Police Department to educate our seniors on these vital security issues.”

“The Allentown Police Department is proud to be a partner with all residents of our city and continue to look for new ways to engage with our community,” said interim Police Chief Glenn Granitz Jr. “In this instance, we are specifically designing information relating to issues that affect our older residents. We look forward to our first-ever Senior Citizens Police Academy.”

Academy classes will focus on elder abuse, identity theft, home and personal security, fraud and telemarketing scams and will include K9, police vehicle and equipment demonstrations.

Applications and information will be available beginning on Tuesday, October 1 at: http://www.allentownpa.gov/Police/Police-Academy/Civilian-Police-Academy. Applications will also be available in hard copy at Lehigh Valley Active Life located at 1633 West Elm Street, or at the information desk at Allentown City Hall.

Class will be limited to 30 students. Allentown residents and Crime Watch group members will be given priority.
