WHITEHALL, PA – April 2026 – On the evening of Tuesday, March 31, the Whitehall Township Public Library hosted a ceremonial groundbreaking to officially kick off a series of transformative building improvements. The event was well attended by township leadership and community supporters, marking the start of a year-long initiative to modernize the facility.
The ceremony featured Mayor Joseph J. Marx, Jr., President of the Board of Commissioners Jeffrey J. Warren, and Township Commissioners Taylor Stakes and Ken Snyder. They joined the entire Library Board of Trustees, led by Board President Denise Shaffer, to celebrate the library’s investment in the community’s future.
“Whitehall Township Public Library is proud to announce an exciting new chapter,” said Denise Shaffer. “Within 2026, the library building will undergo multiple projects to enhance accessibility and functionality, ensuring we remain a premier destination for learning and connection within our community.”
While Tuesday’s ceremony served as the public celebration, Phase 1 of the construction began in February. These initial projects are designed to improve the patron experience through modern infrastructure and inclusive design.
Key Project Features include:
-
Entrance Improvements: Installation of automated openers on entrance doors to provide easier access for all visitors.
-
Restroom Modernization: Comprehensive updates to existing facilities, including the addition of a new ADA-compliant bathroom.
-
Circulation Desk Replacement: A full replacement of the main circulation desk to create a more efficient and welcoming service hub.
-
Exterior Enhancements: Replacement of exterior windows for improved energy efficiency and a complete remodel of the library’s pergola.
These vital improvements ensure that the library continues to serve as a sanctuary for curious minds and a vital gathering place for shared community resources. The project is a centerpiece of the library’s mission to provide every child and resident in Whitehall with modern, high-quality opportunities to discover, learn and grow. The library plans to remain open during the majority of the construction process. Updates will be shared through the library’s website and social media.
