Facemask Donation for Community in Need

The Allentown Rotary helps fight the spread of COVID-19 in Mfuwe, Zambia

(Allentown, PA) The Rotary Club of Allentown, Pennsylvania approved and sent $500 to the Rotary Club of Mfuwe to help make and distribute facemasks to elementary schools in Mfuwe, Zambia. The funds were originally going to be used towards a Toilet Block project in an Mfuwe elementary school, but in January of this year, conditions and priorities in Mfuwe changed as the COVID-19 virus became prevalent in the area. Mfuwe has, so far, avoided an outbreak, but due to recent visitors from Zambia’s capital and other countries coming into the area, the spread of COVID-19 has now become a major health concern.

To help protect their local community, the Rotary Club of Mfuwe asked to use the original

$500 donation to make and hand out facemasks to more than 20 schools. The Club believed this was a more urgent priority and could currently do more to help the community. The Rotary Club of Allentown, Pennsylvania agreed.

The President of the Rotary Club of Mfuwe, Oscar Mwape Musonda, thanked the Rotary Club of Allentown, Pennsylvania for the “generosity towards people you have never seen, known or met”. He stated, “The only solution for the poor village children and their parents was masking up, so your provision of the $500 went a long way in providing masks for the school children.

We employed local tailors to make the masks with the Rotary Club of Mfuwe logo, and distributed them to the community.”
