Rabbi Denise Eger will facilitate an interfaith clergy workshop and a community conversation.

ALLENTOWN, PA – Bradbury-Sullivan LGBT Community Center will host its sixth annual LGBTQ Spirituality Symposium on Monday, January 24, surrounding the theme “Queering Ritual.” The theme considers how clergy and lay leaders across religious traditions can create or utilize ritual to celebrate LGBTQ+ lives.

This year’s featured guest will be Rabbi Denise Eger (she/her), editor of Mishkan Ga’avah: Where Pride Dwells – A Celebration of LGBTQ Jewish Life and Ritual. She is the founding rabbi of Congregation Kol Ami in West Hollywood and is a past president of the Central Conference of American Rabbis, the professional rabbinic association of Reform Judaism.

Rabbi Eger will lead a one-hour interfaith clergy workshop at 4 p.m. Participation will be limited to 15 attendees and costs $30, which includes a copy of Mishkan Ga’avah. A community conversation, free and open to the public, will follow at 6 p.m. Rabbi Eger will be in conversation with Rev. Becky Sausser, pastor of St. John’s United Church of Christ in Allentown. A book signing will follow.

Both events will take place in-person at Bradbury-Sullivan LGBT Community Center (522 West Maple Street, Allentown, PA 18101). Masks are required, regardless of vaccination status.

“It is critical to the health and wellness of LGBTQ+ people that faith communities across the Lehigh Valley are welcoming and fully inclusive of LGBTQ+ congregants,” said Adrian Shanker, executive director of Bradbury-Sullivan LGBT Community Center. “That’s why we started our annual spiritual symposium years ago, and why we continue it in 2022. We are thrilled to have Rabbi Eger visiting Allentown to engage with clergy and community members to help ensure that LGBTQ+ people in our region have options for their spiritual needs.”

Bradbury-Sullivan LGBT Community Center’s 2022 LGBTQ Spirituality Symposium is funded in part by a grant from the E. Rhodes and Leona B. Carpenter Foundation.
