Movies, Music, and Monsters! The 6th Annual Jim Thorpe Independent Film Festival is back!

Jim Thorpe, PA – Are you ready for four days of thrilling movies, live music, and parties? The 6th Annual Jim Thorpe Independent Film Festival (JTIFF) is happening from April 20th to April 23rd, 2023, and it’s going to be the biggest and best one yet!

With nine brand-new first-run features and eight blocks of short films, JTIFF has something for everyone. The festival is proud to partner with Philadelphia’s GREAT CIRCLES to bring you sensational live Audio/Visual Performances that will make your heart race and your feet move.

On opening night, Thursday, April 20th, JTIFF will kick off with an electrifying performance by Funk and Psychedelic band LADY HD from Philly. Then, we’ll reveal our top-secret opening night feature, which we promise will be totally out of this world!

JTIFF’s eclectic program includes STARRING JERRY AS HIMSELF, directed by Law Chen, which won the 2023 SLAMDANCE Film Festival Grand Jury Prize and the Audience Award. This film documents how a retired immigrant father named Jerry is recruited by the Chinese secret police to be an undercover agent.  JTIFF will be the film’s Pennsylvania Premiere.

Horror fans will be thrilled to see not one, but two interpretations of Mary Shelly’s haunting tale. BIRTH/REBIRTH, directed by Laura Moss, is a psychological horror tale about motherhood, creation, and loss. It premiered at the 2023 Sundance Film Festival to rave reviews, and JTIFF is proud to be the first to screen it in Pennsylvania. Our second offering, THE ANGRY BLACK GIRL AND HER MONSTER, written and directed by Bomani J. Story, is a captivating tale of a young girl named Vicaria who embarks on a dangerous journey to bring her brother back to life after his brutal murder. It premiered at SXSW in March, and JTIFF is honored to have Bomani J. Story, himself, flying in from Los Angeles to present his film for its Pennsylvania Premiere!

And that’s not all! JTIFF is excited to host members of the LENAPE NATION for a screening of KEEPERS OF THE WAY, directed by Evan Cohen on Sunday, April 23rd at 5pm. This intimate portrait of the Lenape Nation documents their challenging spiritual journey to heal past wounds and keep their culture alive. After the film, Lenape Nation members and director Even Cohen will do Q&A with the audience.

Of course, JTIFF wouldn’t be complete without our infamous GRINDHOUSE block on Saturday, April 22nd, at midnight. It’s two bloody hours of the most shocking and gloriously offensive short films from around the world. And as usual, no one under 18 will be admitted to the Grindhouse block.

And don’t forget the amazing parties! Join us at the Filmmakers’ Gala on April 21st at the Mauch Chunk Ballroom (41 West Broadway, Jim Thrope, PA), featuring drinks, passed hors d’oeuvres, and a surreal video and light show.  DJ MERLOT out of Philadelphia will keep the dance floor pumping until the wee hours. Marion Hose Bar hosts our Opening Night Afterparty, and we have our Closing Night Wrap Party on Sunday 4/23 after the Awards Ceremony.  Stay tuned for more info.
