The First in Math Zip Code Challenge.

First in Math, an Easton-based company, is launching this initiative in conjunction with the Montgomery County Intermediate Unit (MCIU) to get kids and adults to talk about and engage with math in a fun way.

The five-day event begins tomorrow, May 23rd, and runs through May 27th. Kids and their families can participate by logging into the First in Math platform (www.firstinmath.com) and begin playing to figure out which Montogomery County zip code has the most fearless mathematicians. All schools in the winning zip code will receive a prize at the end of the competition.

According to the state Department of Education — less than half of all PA elementary school students score proficient in mathematics. First in Math has a proven track record of building math skills in elementary students and Sen. Lisa Boscola would like to see this program adopted statewide. She’s put forth a current piece of legislation that aims to achieve this goal and the Zip Code Challenge is a pilot program that seeks to raise awareness of how fun math can be when it’s presented that way.

Here’s more background on the legislative effort.
