The Literacy Center graduates more than 50 adult learners at
2025 Virtual Graduation Ceremony
ALLENTOWN, PA – July 3, 2025 – On Wednesday, June 18, The Literacy Center virtually held its annual graduation ceremony to honor the achievements of adult learners from across the Lehigh Valley.
More than 50 students received their certificates from the Center’s three programs – English as a Second Language (ESL), High School Equivalency (GED), and Workforce Development. Lead sponsors for the event include PPL and Just Born. Administrative Professional Training Program Graduate Leisle Moening and ESL Graduate Eris Gomez spoke on behalf of their fellow graduates.
The 2025 McCrossan Award was presented to Mickey Maldonado. The award is named for Dr. Linda V. McCrossan, who served as The Literacy Center’s Executive Director from its founding in 1977 until her untimely passing in 2006. This award is given annually to a former student who embodies her same motivation, courage, and tenacity to improve lives through literacy.
Mickey Maldonado’s journey embodies resilience, dedication, and service. After spending three intensive years in advanced ESL classes, overcoming linguistic and cultural barriers, Mickey transitioned into firefighter training. His dedication to public safety and community welfare has earned him this year’s McCrossan Community Award, recognizing, not just academic achievement, but civic devotion as well.
The keynote speech was presented by The Literacy Center Board Chair Jane Hudak, who spoke of her own journey from store clerk to college student to college advisor to college administrator at Muhlenberg College.
Founded in 1977, The Literacy Center empowers over 1,500 adults each year through education.
