{"id":102696,"date":"2020-09-05T22:57:22","date_gmt":"2020-09-06T02:57:22","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.thevalleyledger.com\/?p=102696"},"modified":"2020-09-05T22:57:22","modified_gmt":"2020-09-06T02:57:22","slug":"history-of-wampum-and-its-uses-museum-of-indian-culture","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.thevalleyledger.com\/?p=102696","title":{"rendered":"History of Wampum and its uses &#8211; Museum of Indian Culture"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Allentown, Pa. ~ the\u00a0<b>Museum of Indian Culture, 2825 Fish Hatchery Rd., Allentown, PA 18103\u00a0<\/b>welcomes families to<b>\u00a0SATURDAYS AT THE MUSEUM<\/b>, a series of special programs \/ lifeways demonstrations offered that celebrates the culture and heritage of this nation\u2019s First Peoples.<\/p>\n<p>Although shell beads have been around for thousands of years, the cylindrical white and purple beads we recognize as wampum were only produced after European contact. \u00a0Steel tools made drilling the long, small diameter holes possible. \u00a0These beads held more value than their beauty.\u00a0 Colonists used them as currency.\u00a0 Native communities used them to commemorate significant events or send messages.<\/p>\n<p>On Saturday, September 12, 2020, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., primitive lifeways specialist, Christine Applegate will explore the history and production of the beads from whelk and quahog shells and the techniques to weave them into belts. \u00a0Try your hand using a pump drill to make a shell bead<\/p>\n<p>Admission includes demonstration and museum tour: $5 for adults, $4 for seniors and children 12-17, and children under 12 are free.<\/p>\n<p><strong>For more information<\/strong>, please call the museum at\u00a0<u><a href=\"tel:610-797-2121\">610-797-2121<\/a><\/u>\u00a0or email\u00a0<u><a href=\"mailto:info@museumofindianculture.org\">info@museumofindianculture.org<\/a><\/u>.
