{"id":104326,"date":"2020-12-08T19:50:05","date_gmt":"2020-12-09T00:50:05","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.thevalleyledger.com\/?p=104326"},"modified":"2020-12-08T19:50:05","modified_gmt":"2020-12-09T00:50:05","slug":"allentown-achieves-maximum-municipal-equality-rating-2","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.thevalleyledger.com\/?p=104326","title":{"rendered":"ALLENTOWN ACHIEVES MAXIMUM MUNICIPAL EQUALITY RATING"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The City of Allentown has earned a maximum 100-point score in the 2020 Municipality Equality Index (MEI) from the Human Rights Campaign Foundation.\u00a0 It marks the fourth consecutive year of that achievement.<u><\/u><u><\/u><u><\/u>\u00a0<u><\/u><\/p>\n<p>The MEI examines how inclusive municipal laws, policies and services are of LGBTQ people who live and work there.\u00a0 Cities are rated based on non-discrimination laws, the municipality as an employer, municipal services, law enforcement and the city leadership\u2019s public position on equality.<u><\/u><u><\/u><u><\/u>\u00a0<u><\/u><\/p>\n<p>\u201cAllentown has worked hard to be recognized as an inclusive community,\u201d said Mayor Ray O\u2019Connell. \u201cWhat we have achieved over the years on the MEI scorecard is a result of that hard work.\u201d<u><\/u><u><\/u><u><\/u>\u00a0<u><\/u><\/p>\n<p>In all the MEI surveys 506 cities. It includes among other things the country\u2019s 200 largest cities, the five largest cities or municipalities in each state and all 50 state capitals. In Pennsylvania, only Philadelphia, Pittsburgh and State College joined Allentown with scores of 100 based on 49 different criteria.
