{"id":105081,"date":"2021-01-31T12:21:18","date_gmt":"2021-01-31T17:21:18","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.thevalleyledger.com\/?p=105081"},"modified":"2021-01-31T12:21:28","modified_gmt":"2021-01-31T17:21:28","slug":"snow-emergency-in-the-city-ofallentown","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.thevalleyledger.com\/?p=105081","title":{"rendered":"SNOW EMERGENCY IN THE CITY OF ALLENTOWN"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><b>Mayor Ray O\u2019Connell is declaring a Snow Emergency in the City of Allentown effective at 7:00 a.m. on Monday, February 1, 2021.\u00a0<\/b><b>\u00a0<\/b><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">By ordinance, a \u201csnow emergency,\u201d requires owners to remove their vehicles from posted routes. Signs are posted on snow emergency routes, which are also published on the city website,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.allentownpa.gov\/\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=http:\/\/www.allentownpa.gov\/&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1612199338661000&amp;usg=AFQjCNE-HUzLos9qgpDKlT88ytKpsQli_g\">www.allentownpa.gov<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">City Public Works Director Craig Messinger warns that vehicles left on designated routes during a snow emergency will be ticketed and towed, the total costs of which can exceed $200.\u00a0<u>Parking is prohibited on the routes until the emergency is officially lifted<\/u>. Residents should also go to the city website or avail themselves of local news media sources to learn when the snow emergency is lifted.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">City residents are advised to wait until plows have been down their street before shoveling driveways and are asked to avoid throwing snow back onto the streets.\u00a0<b>\u00a0<\/b><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Allentown Parking Authority is making the\u00a0Arena North Deck (712 W. Linden with room for 700 vehicles)\u00a0available for free parking for residents during the snow emergency beginning at 3:00 p.m. on Sunday, January 31, 2021.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Should that deck be full, Authority personnel will direct drivers to the next available deck.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Parking will also be available in two Allentown School District Parking Decks:<b>\u00a0<\/b><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">18<sup>th<\/sup>&amp; Turner Parking Deck<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Saint Cloud &amp; Liberty Parking Deck<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Allentown Fairgrounds parking lot will also be available beginning at 3:00 p.m. on Sunday, January 31, 2021. Motorists are asked to enter at Gate 8 on Liberty Street.\u00a0<b>\u00a0<\/b><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><b>According to Messinger, plows and salt spreaders are mounted on some 50 trucks to make traveling in the city as safe as possible.\u00a0<\/b><b>\u00a0<\/b><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><b>Motorists are urged to stay off the roadways as travel will be treacherous during this storm.\u00a0\u00a0<\/b><b>\u00a0<\/b><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><b>Messinger said, \u201cWe ask that the public please refrain from throwing snow into the street.\u00a0\u00a0We ask for your patience and cooperation to allow our crews to do their jobs.\u201d\u00a0<\/b><b>\u00a0<\/b><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Plows will operate day and night working to keep main arteries open and then shifting to secondary roads and alleys.\u00a0\u00a0The city has more than 440 miles of roadway that consists of about 1,500 lane miles that need to be cleared.<b>\u00a0<\/b><b>\u00a0<\/b><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><b>The city has an ample supply of road salt and anti-skid material.\u00a0<\/b><b>\u00a0<\/b><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><b>The city\u2019s Emergency Operations Center will open at 7:00 a.m. on Monday, February 1, 2021.\u00a0<\/b><b>\u00a0<\/b><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><b>Information on snow removal operations will be available at\u00a0<\/b><a href=\"https:\/\/www.allentownpa.gov\/Public-Works\/Streets\/Snow-Operations\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/www.allentownpa.gov\/Public-Works\/Streets\/Snow-Operations&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1612199338662000&amp;usg=AFQjCNFxK9y-ohRIQDsKB6prml0hv13o1Q\">Snow Operations (allentownpa.gov)<\/a>.<b>The city\u2019s \u201cSnow Operations Hotline\u201d will be staffed throughout the Snow Emergency at 610-437-7669.\u00a0<\/b><b>\u00a0<\/b><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Please do not call 9-1-1 unless it is an emergency.\u00a0\u00a0Do not call 9-1-1 because your street has not been plowed.\u00a0\u00a0Contact 610-437-7669 for updates on snow plowing activity in your neighborhood.<b>\u00a0<\/b><b>\u00a0<\/b><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Waste Management Sunday night garbage collection in the city will take place as scheduled.\u00a0<\/strong><b>\u00a0<\/b><\/p>\n<p>Information provided to TVL by:<br \/>\nMike Moore<br \/>\nCommunications Manager<br \/>\nMayor&#8217;s Office<br \/>\n435 Hamilton Street<br \/>\nAllentown, PA 18101<br \/>\nMike.Moore@allentownpa.gov<br \/>\nhttp:\/\/www.AllentownPA.gov<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Mayor Ray O\u2019Connell is declaring a Snow Emergency in the City of Allentown effective at 7:00 a.m. on Monday, February 1, 2021.\u00a0\u00a0 By ordinance, a \u201csnow emergency,\u201d requires owners to &hellip;
