{"id":106368,"date":"2021-04-19T16:00:11","date_gmt":"2021-04-19T20:00:11","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.thevalleyledger.com\/?p=106368"},"modified":"2021-04-19T16:00:11","modified_gmt":"2021-04-19T20:00:11","slug":"allentown-awarded-multi-modal-grant","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.thevalleyledger.com\/?p=106368","title":{"rendered":"ALLENTOWN AWARDED MULTI-MODAL GRANT"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The Commonwealth of Pennsylvania\u2019s Multi-Modal Transportation Fund is providing $830,000 for a project on 15<sup>th<\/sup>\u00a0Street in the city of Allentown.<\/p>\n<p>The funds will pay for\u00a0installation of a new traffic signal at 15th and Highland Street\u00a0and upgrading two existing traffic signals along 15<sup>th<\/sup>\u00a0Street at Sumner Avenue and\u00a0Roth Avenue and tying in with the city\u2019s traffic adaptive system. A new pedestrian crossing Rectangular Rapid Flashing Beacon (RRFB) will be installed in front of Trexler Middle School at 15<sup>th<\/sup>\u00a0and Greenleaf Street.<\/p>\n<p>The city is required to provide a $250,000 match for a total estimated project cost of\u00a0$1,080,750.<\/p>\n<p>The 15<sup>th<\/sup>\u00a0Street work is among 43 highway, bridge, rail, and bike and pedestrian projects in 21 counties totally $45.9 million that were announced Friday by Pennsylvania Governor Tom Wolf.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTransportation moves communities and economies forward,\u201d Governor Wolf said. \u201cThese investments will assist with overall mobility and safety in our local communities.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis will be a tremendous safety improvement to a key stretch of 15<sup>th<\/sup>\u00a0Street for the motoring public and for students walking to school,\u201d said Mayor Ray O\u2019Connell.<\/p>\n<p>The new traffic signal at 15<sup>th<\/sup>\u00a0and Highland was recommended in a\u00a0November 2019 PennDOT Local Technical Assistance Program (LTAP) study.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe signals at the existing lights run pre-timed programs. There is no communication between the intersections to provide coordination,\u201d O\u2019Connell said. \u201cAll the intersections do not have ADA compliant curb ramps and there are no pedestrian signals at the signalized intersections.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The city has identified the following improvements: \u2022 Connection of the project intersections to the centralized system, including traffic signal controller upgrades: \u2022 Installation of video detection \u2022 Full Modernization at the intersections including mast arms, signal heads, and pedestrian upgrades including ADA ramps.<\/p>\n<p>The installation of video detection at the intersections will provide for an improved intersection operation, while allowing for remote monitoring. This will allow for improved management of the existing traffic signal system.
