{"id":106606,"date":"2021-05-10T21:36:23","date_gmt":"2021-05-11T01:36:23","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.thevalleyledger.com\/?p=106606"},"modified":"2021-05-10T21:36:23","modified_gmt":"2021-05-11T01:36:23","slug":"women-and-girls-foundation-to-hold-first-trail-graduation-on-may-11","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.thevalleyledger.com\/?p=106606","title":{"rendered":"Women and Girls Foundation to hold  first TRAIL graduation on May 11"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><em>The Training Regional Advocates to Impact Legislation program supports people with disabilities in learning strategies to make systemic change<\/em><\/p>\n<p>(May 10, 2021) &#8212; The Women and Girls Foundation (WGF) will celebrate the first cohort to complete its Training Regional Advocates to Impact Legislation (TRAIL) program during a graduation ceremony from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Tuesday, May 11 via Zoom.<\/p>\n<p>Thirty-four graduates participated in the 10-month training program, which helped them gain skills to advocate for the needs of the disability community. They learned about the history of disability rights and developed methods of advocating and working with legislators. Through workshops and monthly meetings, the TRAIL trainees became informed experts on critical policies, including paid family and medical leave.<\/p>\n<p>Dr. Josie Badger, CRC, DHCE,\u00a0created the TRAIL program in 2020, and WGF launched it in collaboration with\u00a0Centers for Independent Living\u00a0throughout Pennsylvania. It\u2019s funded by\u00a0FamilyValues@Work,\u00a0Paid Leave for All\u00a0and\u00a0Laurel Medical Supplies.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTRAIL gave advocates with disabilities the opportunity to come together and develop skills to truly impact the decisions that will affect their lives,\u201d Dr. Badger said. \u201cFor this population, paid family and medical leave impact the trajectory for their lives and that of their families.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>During the duration of the program, the cohort wrote and sent 20 letters to legislators, made seven conference presentations and participated in more than a dozen meetings with legislators and political candidates. Bryan Cutler\u00a0and\u00a0Rebecca Cokley, the Ford Foundation&#8217;s first Disability Rights Program Officer, will be among the featured speakers at the graduation. TRAIL leaders and graduates also will share their own special messages.
