{"id":112410,"date":"2022-05-26T22:37:49","date_gmt":"2022-05-27T02:37:49","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.thevalleyledger.com\/?p=112410"},"modified":"2022-05-26T22:38:21","modified_gmt":"2022-05-27T02:38:21","slug":"allentown-rotary-club-awarded-mullin-scholarships-to-three-local-students","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.thevalleyledger.com\/?p=112410","title":{"rendered":"Allentown Rotary Club Awarded Mullin Scholarships to Three Local Students"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em>Featured Image: State Representative Michael Schlossberg makes a few remarks to our scholarship recipients: Kendaline FLores,\u00a0Nephtalle Charles and Xiushan<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Allentown, PA (May 20) \u2013 At a special lunch meeting on Friday, May 20th, the Allentown Rotary Club (ARC) held its annual Scholarship Presentation luncheon, honoring students from Allen and Dieruff High Schools.<\/p>\n<p>The ARC Scholarship Committee selected\u00a0<strong>Nephtalie Charles<\/strong>\u00a0from William Allen High School,\u00a0<strong>Kendaline Flores<\/strong>, and\u00a0<strong>Xiushan (SueSun) Li<\/strong>\u00a0from Dieruff High School to receive\u00a0<strong><em>Roger and Louise Mullin Scholarships<\/em><\/strong>\u00a0beginning in the 2022-2023 academic year.<\/p>\n<p>Each young woman will receive\u00a0<strong>$3,000 per year for a maximum amount of $12,000 over four years<\/strong>. These scholarships are awarded to outstanding students from Allentown high schools who will attend a four-year college or university.\u00a0 Candidates were evaluated on their community service, leadership skills, academic achievement, financial need and interview skills.<\/p>\n<p><strong><u>Nephtalie Charles<\/u><\/strong>: will\u00a0be graduating from Willian Allen and entering Cedar Crest College School of Nursing. She has plans to become an EMT, a PICU nurse (after graduation) and then a nurse practitioner.\u00a0 She\u00a0has\u00a0been\u00a0a volunteer\u00a0with DaVinci Science\u00a0Center Summer Camps, reading to\u00a0elementary\u00a0kids both in person and through Zoom.\u00a0 \u00a0She is President of the Black Student Union, a National Honor Society member, Science NHS and a member of Allen&#8217;s Field Hockey and Track and Field teams.\u00a0 She\u00a0completed the Penn State Teen Entrepreneurial Challenge in the Summer of 2021.<\/p>\n<p><strong><u>Kendalin Flores<\/u><\/strong>: will be\u00a0graduating\u00a0from Dieruff and\u00a0entering Lehigh University with plans\u00a0to study biomedical engineering and\u00a0regenerative medicine.\u00a0 She\u00a0has\u00a0been\u00a0a member of the National Honor Society, Spittin Truth spoken word poetry and Debate Clubs, as well as Varsity Softball, Student Council and Varsity Swimming.\u00a0 She attended Lehigh&#8217;s Summer Engineering Institute.<\/p>\n<p><strong><u>Xiushan Li (pronounced SueSun)<\/u><\/strong>: \u00a0will be\u00a0graduating from Dieruff and entering Lehigh University planning a MBA.\u00a0 She\u00a0is\u00a0a member of Dieruff&#8217;s Marching Band and is a flutist.\u00a0 She is Secretary of Key Club, a member and service coordinator of the National Honor Society.\u00a0 She\u00a0has\u00a0taken\u00a0psychology courses\u00a0at Yale and Sociology and Principles of Marketing classes at LCCC.\u00a0 She\u00a0was\u00a0accepted\u00a0into the Global Summer Learning Institute\u00a0LEAD Program.<\/p>\n<p>More information about the scholarships is available on the AllentownRotary.org website.\u00a0 Rotarians on the Scholarship Committee are: Rosaria Stoops (chair), Ibi Balog; Tom Brogan; Carmen Flosdorf; Grant Fox; Deb Fries-Jackson; George Naef; and Nan Yarrish.<\/p>\n<p>The event was held at the Cedar Crest College student center and was well attended, including regular ARC members, students, school officials, and guests of the scholarship recipients. State Representative Mike Schlossberg was also in attendance and gave a brief talk recognizing the achievements of the students.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Scholarship History<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The late Rotarian Roger W. Mullin Jr., a former chairman of the board of Mack Trucks, presented a\u00a0scholarship\u00a0endowment gift to the Allentown Rotary Scholarship Foundation in 1993.<\/p>\n<p>According to Mullin, he and his late wife could not have children, so the Rotary scholarship and their donations to educational institutions are helping &#8220;kids with talent get what they deserve.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>After retirement from Mack Trucks in the early 1980s, Mullin was appointed chairman of the board for Coplay Cement Company.\u00a0 Known for his interest in and support of the arts, Mullin was president of the Pennsylvania Shakespeare Festival at Allentown College.
