{"id":112465,"date":"2022-06-02T22:47:38","date_gmt":"2022-06-03T02:47:38","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.thevalleyledger.com\/?p=112465"},"modified":"2022-06-02T22:47:38","modified_gmt":"2022-06-03T02:47:38","slug":"allentown-public-works-director-confirmed","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.thevalleyledger.com\/?p=112465","title":{"rendered":"Allentown Public Works Director Confirmed"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Allentown, PA \u2013\u00a0<\/strong>Last night,<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>Allentown City Council unanimously confirmed the appointment of Mark Shahda as Public Works Director following Mayor Matt Tuerk\u2019s recommendation to promote him to this Cabinet level position.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI can\u2019t think of a better candidate than Mark to lead Public Works,\u201d said Tuerk. \u201cAllentown\u2019s streets and other infrastructure are unique among cities and effectively managing them requires a special understanding that comes from lifelong experience. Mark brings that perspective and combines it with a commitment to innovation which will serve our city well. I\u2019m so excited to work with him.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Shahda was the department\u2019s Deputy Director prior to stepping up as Interim Public Works Director this past March.<\/p>\n<p>As Director, he will oversee Streets, Stormwater, Engineering, Fleet Management, Bureau of Building Maintenance, Office of Compliance, Recycling and Solid Waste, Traffic Planning, and Technical Services.<\/p>\n<p>The responsibilities that lie within the department include the maintenance and repair of all City streets, bridges, stormwater lines and sidewalks, as well as the management of traffic signals and signage; the design of public works projects and review of related construction; the maintenance and repair of all City motorized equipment; trash collection and disposal of solid waste; and the maintenance and repair of City owned buildings.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI would like to express my gratitude to Mayor Tuerk and to city council for this great opportunity,\u201d Shahda said. \u201cPublic Works plays a critical role in delivering daily services that positively affect the everyday quality of life of our residents by providing comfort, health, and convenience. I am extremely grateful to be given the chance to continue to build upon the success of the department and also looking forward to leading and working with so many talented and devoted managers and employees.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Shahda, who is a bilingual Syrian-American, was born and raised in Allentown and is a graduate of Dieruff High School.
