CENTER VALLEY, Pa. \u2014 Hundreds of guests gathered on a picturesque Saturday night to help raise\u00a0$155,000<\/strong>\u00a0for the Good Shepherd Rehabilitation Hospital Emily Howatt Pliskatt Pediatric Unit and to mark a milestone with robotic technology that helps children walk.<\/p>\n

Good Shepherd Rehabilitation Network hosted the 2022 Gala in the Garden \u2013 Drive-In Edition on June 4, 2022,\u00a0raising funds that benefit children and families served by our Pediatric Unit, located at 2855 Schoenersville Road\u00a0in Bethlehem.<\/p>\n

Guests dined on gourmet boxed dinners and an assortment of food-truck desserts and played lawn games, all on the campus of Olympus Corporation of the Americas in Center Valley \u2014 just down the road from Good Shepherd\u2019s under-construction rehabilitation hospital, which is slated to open in 2023.<\/p>\n

With a smile and an encouraging countdown from the outdoor crowd, 4-year-old Nephtali \u201cNephy\u201d Andujar took the\u00a01 millionth step in the Trexo Plus<\/strong>, a robotic gait training device that empowers children to walk, maybe even for the first time. Good Shepherd is the\u00a0only health-care provider in the country<\/strong>\u00a0to provide all three sizes of the device, and, thanks to Nephy\u2019s momentous steps alongside physical therapist Alyssa Metzger, is\u00a0the first provider in the world to reach the 1 million steps<\/strong>\u00a0milestone.<\/p>\n

\u201cGood Shepherd\u2019s clinical experts continue to conduct research with the Trexo to help make a meaningful difference in the lives of patients with pediatric stroke, cerebral palsy, spinal cord injury and other gait disorders,\u201d Amanda Kleckner, administrative director of pediatrics, told the assembled Gala crowd. \u201cWe appreciate you all being here tonight and for helping us provide hope to children facing complex medical challenges.\u201d<\/p>\n

Good Shepherd has\u00a0six total devices in all three sizes<\/strong>\u00a0(small, medium and large) for outpatient and inpatient rehabilitation settings.\u00a0The wearable device allows\u00a0children with lower-extremity weakness and\/or spasticity to get on their feet and walk.<\/p>\n

Good Shepherd’s 20-bed Pediatric Unit is the only pediatric rehabilitation unit in the region and the only Commission on Accreditation of Rehabilitation Facilities (CARF)-certified vent weaning provider in the Commonwealth.<\/p>\n
