(LEHIGH VALLEY, PENNSYLVANIA, June 7, 2022) \u2013 In response to the passage of the so-called \u201cFairness in Women\u2019s Sports Act\u201d by the Pennsylvania State Senate today, Eastern PA Trans Equity Project (\u201cEPTEP\u201d) stridently condemns this action. EPTEP also wants transgender youth in Pennsylvania to know that they have allies who stand with them and support them. Governor Wolf has vowed to veto the bill.<\/p>\n
\u201cIt is unfortunate that instead of focusing on the most important issues to the public – including school funding, gun safety and deteriorating infrastructure – these legislators would rather focus on wedge issues that would further stigmatize an already marginalized population\u201d said Corinne Goodwin, Executive Director of EPTEP.<\/p>\n
Legislators have been unable to point to a single instance where a K-12 transgender student in Pennsylvania is dominating their competitors in school-sponsored competition. Legislators have also failed to take other common-sense actions to support girls\u2019 sports. This includes ensuring that female athletes have access to equal quality facilities and an equal range of sporting activities.<\/p>\n
\u201cThis is part of a nationally coordinated campaign by anti-LGBTQ organizations that seek to harm vulnerable youth while justifying discrimination against transgender people \u2013 something that 63% of Americans feel is wrong. Furthermore, if enacted, this bill could result in accusations being made against cisgender athletes who just happen to be exceptional. It makes no sense whatsoever\u201d Goodwin said.<\/p>\n
This legislation is dangerous, further stigmatizes a vulnerable population and is unnecessary. EPTEP urges PA lawmakers to focus on solving real problems vs. pandering to interest groups who have an axe to grind against LGBTQ people in an election year.<\/p>\n
Interscholastic sports exist because they help to improve students\u2019 educational experiences while helping them to build the character traits needed to become exemplary citizens. That is an outcome that everyone should support. For all students.<\/p>\n
