{"id":112962,"date":"2022-07-12T22:32:07","date_gmt":"2022-07-13T02:32:07","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.thevalleyledger.com\/?p=112962"},"modified":"2022-07-12T22:32:07","modified_gmt":"2022-07-13T02:32:07","slug":"good-shepherd-rehabilitation-network-to-host-free-stroke-risk-screening-event-in-south-allentown","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.thevalleyledger.com\/?p=112962","title":{"rendered":"Good Shepherd Rehabilitation Network to Host Free Stroke-Risk Screening Event in South Allentown"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Allentown, PA<\/strong>\u00a0\u2014 Although strokes can be unpredictable, knowing your risk factors is the first step to taking preventive action.<\/p>\n<p>To help community members understand their own potential risks of stroke, Good Shepherd Rehabilitation Network is hosting a\u00a0<strong>free<\/strong>\u00a0stroke-risk screening event on Wednesday, August 3, 2022, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. It will take place at Good Shepherd\u2019s Hyland Center for Health &amp; Technology Center Middle Level, 850 S. 5<sup>th<\/sup>\u00a0Street, Allentown. The event is open to anyone age 18 and older.<\/p>\n<p>According to the CDC, more than 795,000 people in the U.S. have a stroke \u2014 that\u2019s someone having a stroke every 40 seconds.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cScreenings can help identify stroke risk factors, such as cholesterol, high blood pressure or blood sugar, or modifiable lifestyle habits,\u201d says Rachel Burke, MS, OTR\/L, CSRS, who is an inpatient rehabilitation occupational therapist and Good Shepherd\u2019s stroke program co-chair.<\/p>\n<p>Good Shepherd will offer a variety of free stations, including:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Fall-risk assessments and education on how to decrease your risk of falling<\/li>\n<li>Heart rate and blood pressure screening<\/li>\n<li>Height, weight, body mass index (BMI) and waist-circumference assessment<\/li>\n<li>Nutrition education<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>\u201cThe sooner people can identify their own stroke risks, the sooner they can work with their doctor on ways to reduce those risks,\u201d says Sarah Rice, MS, OTR\/L, CSRS, an inpatient rehabilitation occupational therapist and Good Shepherd\u2019s stroke program co-chair.<\/p>\n<p>A food truck with healthy offerings will be available for attendees, too. Free parking is available in Good Shepherd\u2019s South 5<sup>th<\/sup>\u00a0Street parking garage.<\/p>\n<p>Good Shepherd Rehabilitation Hospital in Allentown is accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Rehabilitation Facilities (CARF) for its Inpatient Stroke Rehabilitation Specialty Program; CARF is the gold standard in rehabilitation.
