Members of the BASD school board recently approved increasing NBM housing advocate positions in three supplementary locations through an<a href=\"https:\/\/www.education.pa.gov\/K-12\/Homeless%20Education\/ARP\/Pages\/default.aspx\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/www.education.pa.gov\/K-12\/Homeless%2520Education\/ARP\/Pages\/default.aspx&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1666739946391000&amp;usg=AOvVaw3J4DmRaEY7Zzoc-ePfNpgu\">\u00a0American Rescue Plan Homeless Children and Youth<\/a>\u00a0grant. The grant sets aside Elementary and Secondary School Emergency Relief (ESSER) funds to provide support and resources for homeless children and youth.<\/p>\n<p>NBM\u2019s Housing Advocacy Program was initially announced last year thanks to a generous donor from\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.unitedwayglv.org\/\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/www.unitedwayglv.org\/&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1666739946391000&amp;usg=AOvVaw2i0Lu5aXvz_iJANrbsUt93\">United Way of the Greater Lehigh Valley<\/a>, which placed NBM housing advocates in three BASD schools, including\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/basdwpweb.beth.k12.pa.us\/donegan\/\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/basdwpweb.beth.k12.pa.us\/donegan\/&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1666739946391000&amp;usg=AOvVaw2sPAxUdxR_UFddPvyZoH9J\">Donegan Elementary School<\/a>,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/basdwpweb.beth.k12.pa.us\/broughal\/\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/basdwpweb.beth.k12.pa.us\/broughal\/&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1666739946391000&amp;usg=AOvVaw0VaERbtGsBuW3Na5t-rXfu\">Broughal Middle School<\/a>, and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/basdwpweb.beth.k12.pa.us\/fountainhill\/\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/basdwpweb.beth.k12.pa.us\/fountainhill\/&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1666739946391000&amp;usg=AOvVaw0TWeDHlr98lHVhkt2xH5Km\">Fountain Hill Elementary School<\/a>. Through this program, housing advocates work collaboratively with faculty to support families in Bethlehem schools and continues to provide rental and other housing assistance services to those in need. With the incorporation of BASD\u2019s acquired ESSER funds, the organization now provides\u00a0on-site housing advocates at six\u00a0BASD schools, including three additional elementary schools,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/basdwpweb.beth.k12.pa.us\/marvine\/\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/basdwpweb.beth.k12.pa.us\/marvine\/&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1666739946391000&amp;usg=AOvVaw04QLGHc-ab0eJQ1lis0Eiv\">Marvine Elementary School<\/a>,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/basdwpweb.beth.k12.pa.us\/thomasjefferson\/\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/basdwpweb.beth.k12.pa.us\/thomasjefferson\/&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1666739946391000&amp;usg=AOvVaw14zyassePnlupekcWT31ht\">Thomas Jefferson Elementary School<\/a>, and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/basdwpweb.beth.k12.pa.us\/williampenn\/\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/basdwpweb.beth.k12.pa.us\/williampenn\/&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1666739946391000&amp;usg=AOvVaw1X6QbHbeTfyDQecIjHXTRF\">William Penn Elementary School<\/a>. As a result of this expansion, NBM can fulfill its mission of providing comprehensive programming to help individuals and families work towards, achieve, and maintain self-sufficiency.<\/p>\n<p>Currently, each housing advocate spends 20 hours a week providing counseling, rent assistance, housing placement, and establishing relationships at each school to create a comfortable atmosphere for students and families.\u00a0In the program\u2019s first year, about 40 families experiencing financial insecurities received housing assistance.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNew Bethany Ministries is committed to its mission of offering hope and support to people who experience poverty, hunger, and homelessness with dignity and care without judgment,\u201d said Veronne Demesyeux, associate executive director of NBM. \u201cHousing insecurity affects children&#8217;s mental health and directly impacts a child in school, and we can start to see that trauma in their performance.
