Fran faithfully volunteered in the Mission’s kitchen and supported all the men she served on the food line.

Frances volunteered at the Allentown Rescue Mission along with other members of the Outreach Committee at St. Francis of Assisi Church of Allentown. The group, which Fran helped originate, has served meals, usually chili, once every three months for over 15 years. Fran lovingly became known as the “Chili Lady” of the Allentown Rescue Mission.

Food Service Manager and former client of the Allentown Rescue Mission, Francisco Ortiz, bonded with Frances the first time they met. Frances approached Francisco while volunteering in his kitchen and asked if he liked to be called “Fran” because people called her “Fran” too. The two immediately shared a bond and friendship that lasted until her death.

When asked about Frances, Francisco said, “When Fran found out that I was a former client, she became my biggest fan, always supporting and encouraging me. In the kitchen, she was a spark plug. She energized the entire place. I will miss my friend.”

Last week, Joanne Kalny, Michelle Evans, Shirley Hafer, and Joan Webre served chili for the men at the Mission in Fran’s honor. In addition to emergency shelter services (365 days a year), the Allentown Rescue Mission offers a residential life skills program, and transitional employment on the Clean Team Workforce that’s available for hire to the community. The Clean Team Workforce pays the men above PA state minimum wage– helping them save a nest egg to transition back into the community. In a typical year, the Allentown Rescue Mission provides shelter services for over 946 men per year, and serves over 42,000 meals a year to men in need.

To refer someone to the Allentown Rescue Mission for services or to learn ways you can help make a difference please visit www.allentownrescuemission.org

faithfully volunteered in the Mission’s kitchen and supported all the men she served on the food line.

Frances volunteered at the Allentown Rescue Mission along with other members of the Outreach Committee at St. Francis of Assisi Church of Allentown.
