(April 4, 2023)<\/strong>\u00a0\u2014 To help Lehigh Valley community members understand their own potential risks of stroke, Good Shepherd Rehabilitation is hosting a free stroke-risk screening event on May 3 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.<\/p>\n<p>The annual event will take place at Good Shepherd\u2019s Hyland Center for Health &amp; Technology, 850 S. 5<sup>th<\/sup>\u00a0Street, Allentown, PA 18103. It is open to anyone age 18 and older.\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.goodshepherdrehab.org\/events\/good-shepherd-rehabilitation-to-host-free-stroke-risk-screening-event-on-may-3\/\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/www.goodshepherdrehab.org\/events\/good-shepherd-rehabilitation-to-host-free-stroke-risk-screening-event-on-may-3\/&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1680730373505000&amp;usg=AOvVaw3z2wy89jlUiimm5uviasxk\">Registration<\/a>\u00a0is required.<\/p>\n<p>More than 795,000 people in America have a stroke each year, according to\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/stroke\/facts.htm\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/stroke\/facts.htm&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1680730373505000&amp;usg=AOvVaw1JIcze3K77-6ARlUkjIEJH\">the CDC<\/a>, and stroke is a leading cause of long-term disability and reduction in mobility for stroke survivors age 65 and older.<\/p>\n<p>Additionally, May is National Stroke Awareness Month.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cScreenings are vital because they help identify common stroke risk factors,\u201d said Sarah Rice, MS, OTR\/L, CSRS, an inpatient rehabilitation occupational therapist at\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.goodshepherdrehab.org\/location\/good-shepherd-rehabilitation-hospital-allentown\/\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/www.goodshepherdrehab.org\/location\/good-shepherd-rehabilitation-hospital-allentown\/&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1680730373505000&amp;usg=AOvVaw3Z8wYdC1N-ZTFHm2tGBxu8\">Good Shepherd Rehabilitation Hospital<\/a>\u00a0in Allentown and Good Shepherd\u2019s stroke program co-chair. \u201cIt\u2019s good for people to know about cholesterol, high blood pressure or blood sugar, and how to modify life habits.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>At the free event, Good Shepherd will offer a variety of stations, including:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Cholesterol and blood sugar screening (fast for 1 hour prior to attending the event)<\/li>\n<li>Fall-risk assessments and education on how to decrease your risk of falling<\/li>\n<li>Heart rate and blood pressure screening<\/li>\n<li>Height, weight, body mass index (BMI) and waist-circumference assessment<\/li>\n<li>Nutrition education and healthy snacks<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Additionally, Blendlife Food Truck, which serves healthy food, will be on-site.<strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Attendees must pre-register by emailing\u00a0<\/strong><a href=\"mailto:sdevine@gsrh.org\"><strong>sdevine@gsrh.org<\/strong><\/a><strong>\u00a0or calling 610-778-9208<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen you know your stroke risks sooner, the quicker you can talk to your doctor and work to reduce those risks,\u201d says Rachel Burke, MS, OTR\/L, CSRS, an inpatient rehabilitation occupational therapist and Good Shepherd\u2019s stroke program co-chair.<\/p>\n<p>Rice and Burke planned and organized this year\u2019s screening event.<\/p>\n<p>Good Shepherd Rehabilitation Hospital in Allentown is accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Rehabilitation Facilities (CARF) for its Inpatient Stroke Rehabilitation Specialty Program; CARF is the gold standard in rehabilitation.
