Peter Schweyer, this week advanced pieces of legislation to address shortages and student protections.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEvery Pennsylvania student is entitled to a quality education and unfortunately Pennsylvania faces an education crisis with teachers leaving the profession early and teaching becoming a profession many higher-education students do not want to study,\u201d said Schweyer, D-Lehigh. \u201cThese measures would help school districts recruit and maintain the high-caliber teachers that are needed and also help students to achieve the best possible pathway to success.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>According to Schweyer, the House Education Committee approved the following bills at this week\u2019s meetings:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/ldpc6.legis.state.pa.us\/cfdocs\/billinfo\/billinfo.cfm?sYear=2023&amp;sInd=0&amp;body=H&amp;type=B&amp;bn=0100\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/ldpc6.legis.state.pa.us\/cfdocs\/billinfo\/billinfo.cfm?sYear%3D2023%26sInd%3D0%26body%3DH%26type%3DB%26bn%3D0100&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1682642711993000&amp;usg=AOvVaw3c4Nkyfr2-RB1W0YWhw30O\"><strong>HB 100<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0\u2013 Would amend the Public-School Code to require the State Board of Education to establish a tutoring program for students in grades eleven and twelve.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/ldpc6.legis.state.pa.us\/cfdocs\/billinfo\/billinfo.cfm?sYear=2021&amp;sInd=0&amp;body=H&amp;type=B&amp;bn=2206\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/ldpc6.legis.state.pa.us\/cfdocs\/billinfo\/billinfo.cfm?sYear%3D2021%26sInd%3D0%26body%3DH%26type%3DB%26bn%3D2206&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1682642711993000&amp;usg=AOvVaw2x7cKzwZBFZCYGTddFP6vj\"><strong>HB 141<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0\u2013 Would establish the Grow Our Own Educators Program.<strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.legis.state.pa.us\/cfdocs\/billinfo\/billinfo.cfm?syear=2023&amp;sind=0&amp;body=H&amp;type=B&amp;bn=688\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/www.legis.state.pa.us\/cfdocs\/billinfo\/billinfo.cfm?syear%3D2023%26sind%3D0%26body%3DH%26type%3DB%26bn%3D688&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1682642711993000&amp;usg=AOvVaw31yyIn-mY4lxCo9lU4ukYC\"><strong>HB 688<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0\u2013 Would amend the Public-School Code to establish the PA Teach Scholarship Program.<\/p>\n<p>Schweyer added, earlier this month the House Education Committee advanced four other bills which provide protections for students and improve the quality of their education.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.legis.state.pa.us\/cfdocs\/billInfo\/billInfo.cfm?sYear=2023&amp;sInd=0&amp;body=H&amp;type=B&amp;bn=0148\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/www.legis.state.pa.us\/cfdocs\/billInfo\/billInfo.cfm?sYear%3D2023%26sInd%3D0%26body%3DH%26type%3DB%26bn%3D0148&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1682642711994000&amp;usg=AOvVaw3DeEEDSKN22mN1_cNJH5-X\"><strong>HB 148<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0\u2013 Would create an Eating Disorders Taskforce within the PA Department of Education.<strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.legis.state.pa.us\/cfdocs\/billInfo\/billInfo.cfm?sYear=2023&amp;sInd=0&amp;body=H&amp;type=B&amp;bn=0301\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/www.legis.state.pa.us\/cfdocs\/billInfo\/billInfo.cfm?sYear%3D2023%26sInd%3D0%26body%3DH%26type%3DB%26bn%3D0301&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1682642711994000&amp;usg=AOvVaw2xRnrR2bXTNIQdp1_3SwHM\"><strong>HB 301<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0\u2013 Would eliminate derogatory and outdated terminology from the Public-School Code.<strong><u>\u00a0<\/u><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.legis.state.pa.us\/cfdocs\/billInfo\/billInfo.cfm?sYear=2023&amp;sInd=0&amp;body=H&amp;type=B&amp;bn=0663\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/www.legis.state.pa.us\/cfdocs\/billInfo\/billInfo.cfm?sYear%3D2023%26sInd%3D0%26body%3DH%26type%3DB%26bn%3D0663&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1682642711994000&amp;usg=AOvVaw1Yu9MSLs3m4mHwn3I8E6qC\"><strong>HB 663<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0\u2013 Would prohibit a school district from removing a child from school until the residency dispute has been fully resolved.\u00a0<strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.legis.state.pa.us\/cfdocs\/billInfo\/billInfo.cfm?sYear=2023&amp;sInd=0&amp;body=H&amp;type=B&amp;bn=0668\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/www.legis.state.pa.us\/cfdocs\/billInfo\/billInfo.cfm?sYear%3D2023%26sInd%3D0%26body%3DH%26type%3DB%26bn%3D0668&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1682642711994000&amp;usg=AOvVaw2bUWRaa7A3deNQ51g2LjBw\"><strong>HB 668<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0\u2013 Would expand the eligibility requirements for the Fostering Independence Tuition Waiver Program to include children who are placed into kinship care but would have otherwise been in the foster care system.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEqual access to education remains at the top of my legislative priorities and as we work to solve this education crisis in Pennsylvania, it is critical that we pass bills which support both students and educators,\u201d added Schweyer.<\/p>\n<p>All seven measures will now be brought to the full House for
