{"id":117910,"date":"2023-04-28T21:25:30","date_gmt":"2023-04-29T01:25:30","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.thevalleyledger.com\/?p=117910"},"modified":"2023-04-28T21:29:48","modified_gmt":"2023-04-29T01:29:48","slug":"1960s-clothing-and-fashion-at-the-allentown-art-museum","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.thevalleyledger.com\/?p=117910","title":{"rendered":"1960s Clothing and Fashion at the Allentown Art Museum"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: center;\">Groovy new exhibition opens May 6, 2023<\/p>\n<p><strong>Allentown, PA\u2014<\/strong>The Allentown Art Museum is pleased to announce the opening of a major exhibition, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.allentownartmuseum.org\/exhibitions\/60s_fashion\/\"><strong><em>Fashion as Experiment: The \u201960s<\/em><\/strong><\/a><strong>, <\/strong>on <strong>Saturday, May 6, 2023<\/strong>. <em>Fashion as Experiment: The \u201960s <\/em>features more than a hundred garments and accessories from the Museum\u2019s collection that illustrate the tumultuous mood of the decade, ranging from hippie looks to bold ready-to-wear designs by Andr\u00e9 Courr\u00e8ges, Vera Neumann, and more. This fun and colorful exhibition shows how 1960s youth used fashion to express new views and values\u2014and spark a wave of social and political change in America.<\/p>\n<p><em>Fashion as Experiment: The \u201960s <\/em>continues through September 24 and will be supplemented by \u201860s-themed programs at the Museum throughout the spring and summer, including a series of upcycling workshops that kicks off on opening day, May 6, with tie-dying. <strong>Admission to the Museum and galleries is Free for All, Always. <\/strong>Hours are Thursday through Sunday 11 a.m.-4<\/p>\n<p>p.m. and Third Thursdays 11 a.m.-8 p.m.<\/p>\n<p><em>Fashion as Experiment: The \u201960s <\/em>presents styles such as Mod and Pop along with psychedelic looks that capture the decade\u2019s exuberant and irreverent attitude. Shown are men\u2019s and women\u2019s clothing that blur gender boundaries, and miniskirts and hot pants that reflect the era\u2019s sexual revolution. These styles set the stage for countercultural fashions of the late 1960s and early 1970s, including globally inspired designs as well as thrifted and handmade garments.<\/p>\n<p>Early this year the Museum put out a call to the community for vintage family photos showing \u201860s styles, and a selection of those are included in the exhibition on a digital display.<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u201860s-Themed Programs\u2014Free for All!<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>May 5, 6-8 p.m.: <\/strong>Member Preview<\/p>\n<p><strong>May 6, 11 a.m.-4 p.m.: <\/strong>Opening Day of <em>Fashion as Experiment: The \u201860s<\/em><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Family artmaking at the new Fashion Maker Station<\/li>\n<li>Guided tours of the exhibition at 11:30 m.
