(June 1, 2023) &#8211; Lehigh Valley Hospital (LVH)\u2013Cedar Crest and LVH\u2013Pocono are nationally recognized for providing high-quality care to infants and their mothers.<\/p>\n<p>Both hospitals are among 384 health care organizations named to Newsweek\u2019s Best Maternity Hospitals 2023 list. This award is presented by Newsweek and Statista, an international statistics portal and industry ranking provider.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBeing recognized by Newsweek as one of the nation\u2019s top maternity care hospitals was earned by all colleagues who care for new mothers and their babies at LVH\u2013Cedar Crest and LVH\u2013Pocono,\u201d says Amanda Flicker, MD, Chair, Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology, Lehigh Valley Health Network (LVHN). \u201cWe have a comprehensive team of midwives, physicians and nurses who go above and beyond to provide excellent care. I am incredibly proud of all my colleagues.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>To determine the nation\u2019s best maternity care hospitals, Newsweek and Statista invited more than 10,000 medical professionals to participate in a survey. This includes neonatal and perinatal doctors, nurses and midwives who were asked to recommend the nation\u2019s best maternity hospital. Results were determined by two other data sources:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Medical key performance indicators on hospitals with a focus on indicators relevant to maternity care<\/li>\n<li>Results from patient surveys<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>LVH\u2013Cedar Crest and LVH\u2013Pocono provide new mothers and their babies individualized care plans based on their needs. This means taking a team-based approach to provide high-quality care at all levels of risk. Care teams consist of highly-trained obstetricians, maternal fetal medicine specialists, nurses and midwives. LVH\u2013Cedar Crest and LVH\u2013Pocono are the only hospitals in the region to offer midwife care to patients.<\/p>\n<p>The maternity care team is continually learning with education opportunities. The instruction offers each member insights about best-care practices at all levels, including critical moments, during an emergency.<\/p>\n<p>LVHN hospitals in the Lehigh Valley region are Magnet-recognized, which means our nurses demonstrate excellence and deliver high quality. Only 8% of hospitals have earned Magnet recognition.<\/p>\n<p>Taking a comprehensive approach to maternity and infant care means LVH\u2013Cedar Crest and LVH\u2013Pocono can provide exceptional care to our smallest patients.<\/p>\n<p>LVH\u2013Cedar Crest is home to the only Level IV neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) in the region, and LVH\u2013Pocono has a Level III NICU. Both NICUs provide therapies specific to the needs of each newborn, care teams have advanced training, and the facilities are state-of-the art.<\/p>\n<p>New mothers who experience hypertensive disorders after pregnancy have help after being discharged from the hospital with LVHN\u2019s Continuous Ambulatory Remote Engagement Services (CARES) and Heart Health After Preeclampsia programs. Both programs, offered by LVH\u2013Cedar Crest and LVH\u2013Pocono, provide remote heart-monitoring for mothers who have hypertensive disorders or were diagnosed with preeclampsia during pregnancy.<\/p>\n<p>LVHN includes 13 hospital campuses, four in Allentown, two in Bethlehem, one in Easton, one in East Stroudsburg, one in Hazleton, two in Pottsville, one in Lehighton and one in Dickson City, Pa.; 28 health centers; numerous primary and specialty care physician practices; 20 ExpressCARE locations including the area\u2019s only Children\u2019s ExpressCARE; pharmacy, imaging, home health, rehabilitation and lab services; and preferred provider services through Valley Preferred. Specialty care includes: trauma care for adults and children, burn care at the Regional Burn Center; kidney and pancreas transplants; perinatal\/neonatal, cardiac, cancer, orthopedics, neurology, complex neurosurgery capabilities including national certification as a Comprehensive Stroke Center, and robotic surgery in 10 specialties. Lehigh Valley Topper Cancer Institute, Lehigh Valley Heart and Vascular Institute, Lehigh Valley Institute for Surgical<\/p>\n<p>Excellence, Lehigh Valley Orthopedic Institute and Lehigh Valley Fleming Neuroscience Institute physicians provide the most advanced treatments. Lehigh Valley Topper Cancer Institute is a member of the Memorial Sloan Kettering (MSK) Cancer Alliance, an initiative that helps community providers improve the quality of cancer care and offers access to MSK clinical trials.
