Harrisburg, PA \u2013 Earlier this week, Broad and Liberty\u00a0published<\/a>\u00a0an opinion piece written by SRCC Communications Director Michael Straw highlighting the drawbacks of Pennsylvania\u2019s participation in the Regional Greenhouse Gas Initiative (RGGI). In it, he argues why Pennsylvania Senate Democrats should reconsider their position and help Pennsylvanians by pulling the Commonwealth out of RGGI.<\/p>\n

Some of the issues that are highlighted include:<\/p>\n

–\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0Pennsylvania is beginning to see the evidence of\u00a0lost jobs<\/a>\u00a0due to RGGI with the recent closing of the Homer City Generation LP plant.<\/p>\n

–\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0The Public Utility Commission is\u00a0reporting<\/a>\u00a0that energy hikes are still occurring, continuing a trend of\u00a0rising prices<\/a>\u00a0that began last year. This further confirms the Independent Fiscal Office\u2019s projections that RGGI would cost energy producers up to $800 million, a cost passed down to the consumers.<\/p>\n

Meanwhile, another state in our region is doing exactly what this article proposes, pulling out of RGGI. Recently, Virginia has\u00a0started<\/a>\u00a0the process to pull the state out of the initiative.<\/p>\n

Prior to Broad and Liberty\u2019s piece, the PA SRCC had put out numerous\u00a0releases<\/a>\u00a0over the past two years forecasting what RGGI would bring.<\/p>\n
