Jeanne McNeill examined Red Flag Water Usage at Lehigh Valley Health Network.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPennsylvania\u2019s housing stock is\u00a0<a id=\"m_8854324419334321443OWA80bdad35-6176-4f0b-6bc5-4d4b6fe008b1\" href=\"https:\/\/www.tiogapublishing.com\/news\/state\/pennsylvanias-aging-housing-stock-is-the-4th-oldest-in-the-u-s\/article_c3ffca6b-e09d-52e3-ac55-51367cb59ed3.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/www.tiogapublishing.com\/news\/state\/pennsylvanias-aging-housing-stock-is-the-4th-oldest-in-the-u-s\/article_c3ffca6b-e09d-52e3-ac55-51367cb59ed3.html&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1712192079047000&amp;usg=AOvVaw0abL_yDwagaBTO1jlnur5E\">among the oldest in the nation<\/a>, and while residents can responsibly plan for expected repairs, being blindsided by an unseen water leak and unusually high water bill can financial cripple a family and household,\u201d said Rep. McNeill, who represents portions of the city of Bethlehem, Hanover Township, Whitehall Township, Catasauqua, Coplay and Fountain Hill. \u201cResidents are often unaware of an issue until a bill \u2013 sometimes only mailed quarterly \u2013 arrives with hundreds or even thousands more owed than expected. McNeill\u2019s\u00a0<a id=\"m_8854324419334321443OWA6568b88d-4107-3dd4-7981-02082c637f45\" href=\"https:\/\/www.legis.state.pa.us\/cfdocs\/billinfo\/billinfo.cfm?syear=2023&amp;sind=0&amp;body=H&amp;type=B&amp;bn=905\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/www.legis.state.pa.us\/cfdocs\/billinfo\/billinfo.cfm?syear%3D2023%26sind%3D0%26body%3DH%26type%3DB%26bn%3D905&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1712192079047000&amp;usg=AOvVaw0NTQsSGcXh2Sv6VVuTmXQ3\">H.B. 905<\/a>\u00a0would help consumers avoid the nightmare scenario of receiving a mega bill, with payments due and financial penalties awaiting if payments are not made.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cToday we heard about the way consumers can be protected, especially if smart meters are installed and utility companies can flag an otherwise unseen and unknown leak that could result in a nightmare scenario for a homeowner,\u201d Chairman of the House Majority Policy Committee Ryan Bizzarro said. \u201cWe also heard from water authorities, which would prefer the use of advanced metering infrastructure, which places monitoring in the homeowner\u2019s hands.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Tuesday\u2019s Policy hearing featured testimony from residents Mark Weber and Kelly Chevalier.
