(May 7, 2024) \u2013<\/strong><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><strong>Good Shepherd Rehabilitation\u00a0<\/strong>is proud\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.goodshepherdrehab.org\/press-releases\/good-shepherd-rehabilitation-reeves-foundation\/\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/www.goodshepherdrehab.org\/press-releases\/good-shepherd-rehabilitation-reeves-foundation\/&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1715191967775000&amp;usg=AOvVaw3M23UlAy2uM6mSwky30PYI\">to announce<\/a>\u00a0that it has been awarded\u00a0<strong>$25,000<\/strong>\u00a0as part of\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.christopherreeve.org\/\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/www.christopherreeve.org\/&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1715191967775000&amp;usg=AOvVaw2bUYmcwwFAdABX-8TcRffU\">the Christopher &amp; Dana Reeve Foundation National Paralysis Resource Center<\/a>\u00a0(NPRC) 2023 Direct Effect 2<sup>nd<\/sup>\u00a0Cycle Quality of Life grants. Fifty-nine grants totaling $1,271,125 were awarded. The Quality of Life Grants Program supports nonprofit organizations that empower individuals living with paralysis. Since the Quality of Life Grants Program\u2019s inception, more than 3,770 grants totaling $43 million have been awarded. Funding for this program was made possible through a cooperative agreement with the Administration for Community Living (ACL grant #90PRRC0006-03-01).<\/p>\n<p>The Reeve Foundation\u2019s National Paralysis Resource Center has several grants under the Quality of Life program awarding grants in different category areas, varying in different amounts. The Direct Effect grants program funds organizations to support a wide range of projects and activities that will impact individuals living with paralysis and their families.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThese awards are about restoring independence to our constituents,\u201d said Dan McNeal, Director of the Quality of Life Grants Program, Reeve Foundation. \u201cOur work and number one goal are to enhance the quality of life of people living with paralysis. It is our honor to continue to collaborate with so many dedicated organizations, which have selflessly given their time and efforts to ensure that accessibility and inclusivity remain embedded in the fabric of their programs.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>Good Shepherd will use the grant to continue providing specially trained exercise physiologist services, helping\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.goodshepherdrehab.org\/location\/optimal-fitness-at-good-shepherd\/\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/www.goodshepherdrehab.org\/location\/optimal-fitness-at-good-shepherd\/&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1715191967775000&amp;usg=AOvVaw2Y5SLNLQHm-yM2AMVRarEV\">Optimal Fitness at Good Shepherd<\/a><\/strong><strong>\u00a0members with paralysis reach their fitness goals.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\u201cAs the only adaptive fitness center within a 95-mile radius of the Lehigh Valley, Optimal Fitness provides an adaptive environment and structure for patients with complex neurologic conditions, such as spinal cord injury, to continue progressing and promoting recovery supplemental to their therapy and also following discharge from formal therapy,\u201d said James Kelley, PT, DPT, OCS, Outpatient Regional Manager at Good Shepherd.<strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Good Shepherd currently has dozens of members who utilize the gym, located on the first floor of Good Shepherd\u2019s\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.goodshepherdrehab.org\/location\/hyland-center-health-technology\/\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/www.goodshepherdrehab.org\/location\/hyland-center-health-technology\/&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1715191967775000&amp;usg=AOvVaw2Q9M789310ZH6qe0a5aXAC\">Hyland Center for Health &amp; Technology<\/a>, 850 S. 5<sup>th<\/sup>\u00a0St., Allentown.<\/p>\n<p>Guss Sabini of Whitehall, Pa., is one of them; he\u2019s been an Optimal Fitness at Good Shepherd member since his spinal cord injury in 2023. When Sabini started at the gym, he had trouble walking on his own; today, he\u2019s a dedicated gym member who is able to walk without an assistive device.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m starting to get addicted here,\u201d Sabini said of the adaptive gym. \u201cI come twice a week and spend an additional hour to use the electric bike.
