(Aug. 28, 2024) \u2014\u00a0Good Shepherd Rehabilitation has welcomed groundbreaking robotic exoskeleton technology that made history and a\u00a0<\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/p\/C-IU41GoBs7\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>heartwarming viral moment at the Paris Olympics<\/strong><\/a><strong>\u00a0\u2014 becoming the first clinical user in the country to\u00a0utilize this hands-free device to help people with stroke and spinal cord injury to walk.<\/strong><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Beginning this summer, Good Shepherd\u2019s specially trained clinical teams have trialed the technology \u2014 Wandercraft\u2019s Atalante X \u2014 with inpatient rehab patients at\u00a0<\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.goodshepherdrehab.org\/location\/good-shepherd-rehabilitation-hospital\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Good Shepherd Rehabilitation Hospital<\/strong><\/a><strong>, 3200 Center Valley Parkway in Center Valley. Later this fall, the exoskeleton will be available for outpatient neurorehabilitation patients at Good Shepherd\u2019s\u00a0<\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.goodshepherdrehab.org\/location\/hyland-center-health-technology\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Hyland Center for Health &amp; Technology<\/strong><\/a><strong>, 850 S. 5<sup>th<\/sup>\u00a0Street in Allentown.<\/strong><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Technological Advancements in Rehab<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Hands-free robotic exoskeletons allow patients with severe impairments to stand up and walk under the trained guidance of Good Shepherd therapists. The benefits of hands-free exoskeletons are improved endurance, increased step counts during walking, increased flexibility, the ability to use hands during functional balance activities, and pain and spasticity management.<\/strong><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>The Wandercraft technology, available in the U.S., Europe and South America, comes to Good Shepherd courtesy of The Fleming Center for Robotics in Rehabilitation, a forward-thinking hub that identifies and tests robotic and wearable technology to further provide leading-edge rehabilitation care and, ultimately, contribute to the future of rehabilitation. The Fleming Center launched in November 2023 thanks to a major gift from the Fleming Foundation to Good Shepherd.<\/strong><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>\u201cWe are excited about the potential of this new type of exoskeleton to revolutionize patient care,\u201d said Emily Lyter, PT, DPT, administrative director of Good Shepherd Learns, Creates and Research, the team that oversees the Fleming Center at Good Shepherd. \u201cWithout having to use crutches or a walker for balance, Atalante allows a more diverse range of movement patterns we use in our daily lives. Aside from walking, patients can practice activities of daily living, such as reaching for a cup in a cupboard, setting a dinner table or even playing a modified game of pickleball.\u201d<\/strong><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Lyter added: \u201cThrough the Fleming Center for Robotics in Rehabilitation and the incredible support of the Fleming Foundation, we\u2019re able to test, trial and adopt new technologies for our patients.\u201d<\/strong><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Kevin Oldt\u00a0<\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.goodshepherdrehab.org\/news\/good-shepherd-trials-advanced-rehabilitation-robotics-technology-that-went-viral-at-paris-olympics\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>demonstrated the technology<\/strong><\/a><strong>\u00a0inside Empower+ on Good Shepherd\u2019s Center Valley campus on Aug. 28.
