{"id":137306,"date":"2024-11-12T21:39:18","date_gmt":"2024-11-13T02:39:18","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.thevalleyledger.com\/?p=137306"},"modified":"2024-11-12T21:39:18","modified_gmt":"2024-11-13T02:39:18","slug":"capital-blue-cross-sees-strong-results-from-diabetes-management-strategies","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.thevalleyledger.com\/?p=137306","title":{"rendered":"Capital Blue Cross Sees Strong Results from Diabetes Management Strategies"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em>Customers Have Dropped Weight, Reduced Medications, and Saved Millions Combined<\/em><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>HARRISBURG<\/strong>\u00a0\u2013 Capital Blue Cross\u2019 convenient diabetes-management programs have helped the insurer\u2019s customers lose tens of thousands of pounds, reduce their reliance on prescriptions, lower their blood sugar, and collectively save more than $20 million since 2021.<\/p>\n<p>Three years ago, Capital became the first Pennsylvania health insurer to offer a unique program that works to reverse the effects of type 2 diabetes. Capital also began offering a separate program that helps members reduce their risk of developing type 2 diabetes and helps those with types 1 or 2 diabetes manage their disease. These programs are free to members whose plans include them.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSome 135 million Americans either have or are at risk of developing diabetes, and Capital Blue Cross goes the extra mile to give our members a variety of accessible tools to battle the disease,\u201d said Dr. Jeremy Wigginton, Capital Blue Cross Chief Medical Officer. \u201cThese positive outcomes reflect Capital\u2019s commitment to fight and prevent diabetes as effectively and affordably as possible.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Capital\u2019s efforts to combat the diabetes epidemic have been tremendously effective:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Capital members using the programs have lost more than 66,000 pounds since the program started in 2021.<\/li>\n<li>Capital members have averaged a roughly 46% reduction in prescription medications in their first year using the diabetes reversal strategy.<\/li>\n<li>The programs have helped Capital employer group customers save more than $20 million, and members have enjoyed substantial savings. In 2023, for instance, the diabetes reversal program saved the average engaged member more than $2,000, while the diabetes control program saved nearly $1,200.<\/li>\n<li>Members using the diabetes reversal program dropped their A1c levels about one full point on average over their first year in the program. Higher A1c levels are linked to diabetes complications.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/nccdphp\/priorities\/diabetes-interventions.html?CDC_AAref_Val=https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/chronicdisease\/programs-impact\/pop\/diabetes.htm\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/nccdphp\/priorities\/diabetes-interventions.html?CDC_AAref_Val%3Dhttps:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/chronicdisease\/programs-impact\/pop\/diabetes.htm&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1731542072352000&amp;usg=AOvVaw0UvTDmDvy4_70wBR5cc3gZ\">More than 38 million Americans have diabetes<\/a>, reports the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, and an additional 98 million U.S. adults are at high risk of developing it.
