This funding will support the Traffic Calming\/Safety Demonstration Project and Feasibility Study, advancing efforts to make Allentown\u2019s streets safer for pedestrians, cyclists, and drivers.<\/p>\n<p>This grant will fund demonstration activities that align with and complement Allentown\u2019s ongoing safety action plan. Key<\/p>\n<p>initiatives include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Pavement markings <\/strong>to narrow lanes and enhance roadway delineation via a \u201croad diet.\u201d<\/li>\n<li>Installation of <strong>high-visibility crosswalks <\/strong>and <strong>updated signage <\/strong>to prioritize pedestrian safety.<\/li>\n<li>Deployment of <strong>temporary and permanent speed humps <\/strong>near schools and parks to deter speeding.<\/li>\n<li>Testing and evaluating other traffic-calming measures across strategic locations in the city.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>These enhancements will target high-priority areas, ensuring improved safety for all road users and creating a more accessible and welcoming environment for residents and visitors.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cImproving our infrastructure to make communities across our Commonwealth safer is critical. This additional Safe Streets and Roads for All funding will help the City of Allentown install safety measures on its roads to protect pedestrians, drivers, and cyclists alike,\u201d said U.S. Senator Bob Casey. \u201cThanks to the infrastructure law, we can continue delivering investments that keep Pennsylvanians safe.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;A life lost on our roadways is a family devastated,\u201d said Mayor Matt Tuerk. \u201cThis grant provides the resources for immediate, concrete actions to eliminate traffic fatalities in Allentown. These safety improvements will create a more livable, connected city where we can all thrive.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><strong>About the Safe Streets and Roads for All Program<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The <em>Safe Streets and Roads for All <\/em>program, funded by the U.S. Department of Transportation, supports local governments in planning and implementing innovative strategies to improve roadway safety and reduce traffic fatalities.<\/p>\n<p>The City of Allentown launched its <em>Safe Streets for All <\/em>Action Plan this past spring funded by a separate $312,000 SS4A Action Plan Grant from the U.S. Department of Transportation. The project consultant, Michael Baker International, Inc., is working to deliver a final report to Allentown City Council in February 2025.
