{"id":141792,"date":"2025-04-17T23:58:58","date_gmt":"2025-04-18T03:58:58","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.thevalleyledger.com\/?p=141792"},"modified":"2025-04-17T23:58:58","modified_gmt":"2025-04-18T03:58:58","slug":"bloom-hosts-powerful-legislative-breakfast-to-address-sex-trafficking-exploitation-in-the-lehigh-valley","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.thevalleyledger.com\/?p=141792","title":{"rendered":"Bloom Hosts Powerful Legislative Breakfast to Address Sex Trafficking &#038; Exploitation  in the Lehigh Valley"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Survivors\u2019 Voices Take Center Stage with Unveiling of the \u201cBarrier Wall Project\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n[April 17, 2025, LEHIGH VALLEY, PA] &#8211;\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.bloomforwomen.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Bloom<\/strong><\/a>, an organization dedicated to providing sanctuary and a continuum of care to heal, empower and employ survivors of sex trafficking and sexual exploitation in the Lehigh Valley, this morning welcomed nearly 80 attendees, including local lawmakers, government officials, and community leaders, to its inaugural\u00a0<strong>Legislative Breakfast: \u201cShared Dreams. Different Barriers. United for Change!\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Held at The Dime Restaurant in Allentown, the event launched Bloom\u2019s advocacy initiatives and created space for a powerful, solution-driven conversation around human trafficking in the Lehigh Valley. Attendees included\u00a0<strong>U.S. Congressman Ryan Mackenzie<\/strong>,\u00a0<strong>PA State Representative Milou Mackenzie<\/strong>,\u00a0<strong>Northampton County District Attorney Stephen Baratta<\/strong>,\u00a0<strong>Northampton County Controller Tara Zrinski<\/strong>,\u00a0<strong>Fire Deputy District Attorney Robert Eyer<\/strong>, and\u00a0<strong>Allentown Chief of Police Charles Roca<\/strong>. Representatives from five additional elected officials\u2019 offices were also present, underscoring strong bipartisan support for survivor advocacy and anti-trafficking efforts in the region. These included individuals from the offices of\u00a0<strong>U.S. Senator John Fetterman<\/strong>,\u00a0<strong>U.S. Senator Dave McCormick<\/strong>,\u00a0<strong>PA Senator Nick Miller<\/strong>,\u00a0<strong>PA Senator Lisa Boscola<\/strong>, and\u00a0<strong>PA Senator Jarrett Coleman<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>Attendees heard from\u00a0<strong>Bloom CEO Carol Andersen and Outreach Manager Sheniqua Mitchell<\/strong>,\u00a0<strong>U.S. Representative Ryan Mackenzie<\/strong>, and\u00a0<strong>Homeland Security Special Agent Ashley Fernandez<\/strong>, who shared critical insights into the local and national landscape of trafficking, and the urgent need for collaborative, systemic responses.<\/p>\n<p>A powerful highlight of the morning was the\u00a0<strong>unveiling of Bloom\u2019s Barrier Wall Project<\/strong>\u2014a moving, survivor-created art installation illustrating the many barriers faced by survivors, such as stigma, trauma, housing insecurity, criminal records, and debt. The wall then opened to the\u00a0<em>Wall of Dreams<\/em>\u00a0offering a vision of hope, stability, and restored futures.<\/p>\n<p>The event concluded with a deeply moving reading of\u00a0<em>\u201cThe Weight of Walls,\u201d<\/em>\u00a0a collaborative poem written by several of Bloom\u2019s survivors. Their voices offered an honest and emotional reflection on the journey from captivity to healing\u2014and a call to action for those in the room to stand with them.<\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cWe cannot do this work alone,\u201d<\/em>\u00a0said\u00a0<strong>Carol Andersen<\/strong>, CEO of Bloom.\u00a0<em>\u201cPreventing trafficking, protecting victims, healing and empowering survivors, and holding traffickers accountable all require strong public policy, sustainable funding, and a united commitment from lawmakers, advocates, and our community. Survivors are gaining their voices\u2014and we must make sure they are heard.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p>This event marked the official launch of Bloom\u2019s advocacy efforts and reaffirmed the organization\u2019s focus on\u00a0 creating a world where survivors are seen, heard, supported, and empowered to build new futures.<\/p>\n<p><strong>About Bloom for Women<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.bloomforwomen.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Bloom for Women, Inc.<\/a>\u00a0is a faith-based non-profit organization with the mission of providing sanctuary and a continuum of care to heal, empower and employ survivors of sex trafficking and sexual exploitation.
