CENTER VALLEY, PA (May 20, 2025)\u2014Pennsylvania Shakespeare Festival (PSF), in partnership with Philadelphia\u2019s Theatre Horizon, presents\u00a0Penelope<\/em>\u2014a fiercely original musical that finally gives voice to one of history\u2019s most enduring\u2014and long-silenced\u2014women. This one-woman tour de force reimagines Homer\u2019s epic with a soulful score, razor-sharp storytelling, and an onstage band serving as her modern Greek chorus. No longer a footnote in her husband\u2019s saga, Penelope takes the mic\u2014drink in hand\u2014to reclaim her story in an electrifying solo cabaret.<\/p>\n

Inspired by Homer\u2019s\u00a0The Odyssey<\/em>,\u00a0Penelope<\/em>\u2014featuring music, lyrics, and a book by Alex Bechtel, co-written with Grace McLean and Eva Steinmetz\u2014was recently named a Barrymore Recommended production. It previews May 28\u201329, opens May 30, and runs through June 8 in the Schubert Theatre at the Labuda Center for the Performing Arts on the campus of DeSales University.<\/p>\n

Created by five-time Barrymore Award-winning composer, actor, writer, director, teaching artist, and multi-instrumentalist Alex Bechtel,\u00a0Penelope<\/em>\u00a0has captivated audiences from concert stages to full productions\u2014including acclaimed performances at Joe\u2019s Pub at The Public Theater, Rockwood Music Hall in NYC, the Hudson Valley Shakespeare Festival, Signature Theatre in Washington, DC, and Philadelphia\u2019s Theatre Horizon.<\/p>\n

According to Bechtel, \u201cPenelope<\/em>\u00a0is a musical love letter to all those who wait\u2014for someone they love, for something to believe in, and for the hope that the waiting will end well.\u201d<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Rachel Camp reprises her performance as Penelope, returning to the role after its celebrated run at Theatre Horizon. She is joined by Eva Steinmetz (co-author), who returns as director. Camp\u2019s select regional credits include\u00a0Ragtime<\/em>\u00a0(Arden Theatre),\u00a0Into the Woods<\/em>\u00a0(Theatre Horizon, Barrymore Award), and productions at the Walnut Street Theatre. Steinmetz, artistic producer at Philadelphia\u2019s Pig Iron Theatre Company, has directed and co-written works at the Wilma Theater, FringeArts, and Off-Broadway at WP Theater and New York Theatre Workshop.<\/p>\n

A live band serves as a modern Greek chorus with Music Director Justin Yoder, also on cello, conducting the ensemble featuring Garrett Davis (percussion), Nicole Fassold-Harabaruaru (viola), Jamison Forman (piano), and Rachel Massey (violin).<\/p>\n

The creative team includes set and props by You-Shin Chen, lighting design by Thom Weaver, costume design by Nikki Delhomme, and sound design by Damien Figueras. The production stage manager is Randi Alexis Hickey.<\/p>\n

JASON KING JONES<\/strong>\u00a0(Artistic Director) is excited to embark on his third year with PSF. In his first two seasons, Jason expanded the organization\u2019s footprint to include the \u201cPlay On!\u201d Community Tour, the launch of\u00a0Shakespeare 4 Kids\u00a0<\/em>to libraries, and Community Day. Prior to moving to the Lehigh Valley with his family, Jason spent ten years at Maryland\u2019s Olney Theatre Center, where he served as Senior Associate Artistic Director and Artistic Director of National Players. In the past twenty-six years Jason has directed over seventy-five productions, mentored hundreds of early-career theatre makers, and established various in-school and summer educational programs. He is an Acting Company alumnus, a proud member of the PSF Board, the Lehigh Valley Chamber of Commerce\u2019s Nonprofit & Business Partners Council, and the Shakespeare Theatre Association\u2019s Executive Committee. Jason holds a BFA in Theatre Performance from Missouri State and an MFA in Directing from Boston University.<\/p>\n

CASEY WILLIAM GALLAGHER<\/strong>\u00a0(Managing Director) has worked at PSF for 26 seasons. Over the years he was a box office intern, a stage management intern, the assistant house manager, box office manager, company manager, assistant producer, director of development and worked directly with PSF Founder Jerry Schubert in the early years of the organization. Since 2004, in his role as general manager and later managing director, he served as the administrative leader of the Festival, working very closely with former Producing Artistic Director Patrick Mulcahy and the box office, business, development, marketing and production departments. Since 2023, Casey is co-leader of the Festival with Artistic Director Jason King Jones. Beyond PSF, Casey was treasurer for the Shakespeare Theatre Association, director of audience services for The People\u2019s Light & Theatre Company, a board member for Civic Theatre of Allentown, a peer panelist for the New Jersey Council on the Arts and a judge for the Greater Philadelphia Barrymore Awards for excellence in theatre.<\/p>\n
