New Tripoli, PA\u00a0<\/strong>\u2014\u00a0Pennsylvania Treasurer Stacy Garrity, Sen. Jarrett Coleman (R-16), Rep. Gary Day (R-187)\u00a0and Heidelberg Township Administrator Dawn Didra announced today that more than $12,000 in unclaimed property has been returned to Heidelberg Township in Lehigh County.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s always exciting to return unclaimed property to rightful owners, and I\u2019m glad this money will be put to good use to benefit the hardworking residents of Heidelberg Township,\u201d Treasurer Garrity said. \u201cI urge every Pennsylvanian to search Treasury\u2019s database for money that may be theirs to claim. It\u2019s not just individuals who may have property waiting \u2013 businesses, nonprofits and government agencies should search as well.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI join the taxpayers of Heidelberg Township in thanking Treasurer Garrity for her tireless efforts in returning unclaimed property to its rightful owners,\u201d Sen. Coleman said. \u201cThis is a prime example of how state government can work more effectively for the citizens of Pennsylvania.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThanks to the dedicated efforts of Treasurer Garrity and Senator Coleman, Heidelberg Township is receiving important unclaimed funds to invest back into our community,\u201d Rep. Day said. \u201cI encourage everyone to search for unclaimed property\u2014you never know what might be waiting to help your family or neighborhood. Be sure to check with my office to see if there\u2019s unclaimed property waiting for you.\u201d<\/p>\n

The $12,601.44 returned to Heidelberg Township includes four individual properties ranging in value from $546.26 to $5,594.44. The oldest property dates back to 2010, while the most recent is from 2015.\u00a0Properties returned\u00a0<\/a>include funds from\u00a0<\/a>a bearer bond principal, dividends, underlying shares, and a utility refund\/deposit.<\/p>\n

\u201cHeidelberg Township was thrilled to hear the Pennsylvania Treasury Department had found several unclaimed properties belonging to the township, totaling $12,601.44!\u201d Didra said. \u201cThese are dollars that belong to the township, but for whatever reason, the township never received them. These funds will be deposited into the general fund and will help cover the costs of projects undertaken by the township this year to enhance the lives of our residents. The township encourages residents to check if they have any unclaimed property by visiting the Pennsylvania Treasury website.\u201d<\/p>\n

Treasurer Garrity has returned more than $18.8 million to 112 local government agencies, including counties and municipalities.<\/p>\n

Treasury\u00a0is working to return more than $5 billion in unclaimed property to its rightful owners, including more than $63 million owed to Lehigh County residents. More than one in ten Pennsylvanians is owed unclaimed property, and the average claim is worth more than $1,000.<\/p>\n

Unclaimed property can include\u00a0dormant bank accounts, uncashed checks, insurance policies, contents of forgotten safe deposit boxes and more. State law requires businesses to report unclaimed property to Treasury after three years of dormancy.<\/p>\n

Treasury keeps tangible unclaimed property for about three years before it is auctioned. Auction proceeds are kept in perpetuity for owners to claim. Military decorations and memorabilia are never auctioned.<\/p>\n
