Holly is predicting a prolonged period of excessive heat, expected to begin on Sunday, June 22<sup>nd<\/sup> and continue through at least Wednesday, June 25<sup>th<\/sup>. The highest heat index values are expected from Monday through Wednesday.<\/p>\n<p>Take the flowing steps to protect yourself:<\/p>\n<p><strong>Be Informed<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Most heat disorders occur because the victim has been overexposed to heat or has over-exercised for their age and physical condition. Infants and young children, people aged 65 or older and those with chronic medical conditions are more likely to succumb to extreme heat.<\/li>\n<li>Pay close attention to heat advisories or warnings (local television, radio and internet)<\/li>\n<li>The two most common types of heat-related illnesses are heat exhaustion and heat stroke<\/li>\n<li>Never leave your children or pets in a vehicle<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Actions to Keep Cool<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Stay indoors in air conditioning as much as possible<\/li>\n<li>If you must be outside in the heat, limit activity to morning and evening hours, and try to rest often in the shade<\/li>\n<li>Dress in light-colored and loose-fitting clothing, a hat, sunglasses and an SPF 15 or higher sunscreen<\/li>\n<li>Check on family members, older adults and neighbors.<\/li>\n<li>Cover windows with drapes and shades<\/li>\n<li>Use window reflectors in your home to reflect heat back outside<\/li>\n<li>If you don\u2019t have air conditioning, visit a friend\/neighbor, store or mall<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Stay Hydrated<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Drink plenty of water and do not wait until you are thirsty to drink fluids<\/li>\n<li>Stay away from sugary, caffeinated and alcoholic drinks<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>For more information on extreme heat, call the Lehigh County Emergency Management Agency at (610) 782-4600.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Lehigh County: key messages for heat preparedness Lehigh County, PA &#8211; The National Weather Service at Mt.
