{"id":145210,"date":"2025-09-16T21:21:30","date_gmt":"2025-09-17T01:21:30","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.thevalleyledger.com\/?p=145210"},"modified":"2025-09-16T21:21:30","modified_gmt":"2025-09-17T01:21:30","slug":"st-lukes-summer-meal-program-wins-award-for-2nd-year-in-a-row","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.thevalleyledger.com\/?p=145210","title":{"rendered":"St. Luke\u2019s Summer Meal Program Wins Award for 2nd\u00a0Year in a Row"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>St. Luke\u2019s Summer Meal Program Wins Award for 2<sup>nd<\/sup>\u00a0Year in a Row<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>St. Luke\u2019s University Health Network\u2019s Department of Community Health has earned a Gold Level\u00a0<em>Turnip the Beet!<\/em>\u00a0Award for its 2024 Summer Meals program in Allentown and Quakertown, the Pennsylvania Department of Education has announced.<\/p>\n<p>The\u00a0<em>Turnip the Beet!<\/em>\u00a0Award, presented by the U.S. Department of Agriculture\u2019s Food and Nutrition Services (USDA FNS), recognizes outstanding summer meal program sponsors across the country that work hard to offer children high quality meals that are appetizing, appealing and nutritious during the summer months.<\/p>\n<p>St. Luke\u2019s is among 199 sponsors across the country that earned the award for 2024. This is the second year in a row St. Luke\u2019s has won the\u00a0<em>Turnip the Beet!<\/em>\u00a0Award.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBeing a consecutive year winner is quite an accomplishment,\u201d said Dianne M. Dabulis, RD, MPA, LDN, division chief of Nutrition Education &amp; Summer Food Services Programs for the Pennsylvania Department of Education.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.slhn.org\/community-health\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">St. Luke\u2019s Community Health Department<\/a>\u00a0launched the Summer Meals program in 2019 in response to the Network\u2019s\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.slhn.org\/community-health\/community-health-needs-assessment\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Community Health Needs Assessment<\/a>\u00a0(CHNA), which showed that more than half of students in the Allentown and Quakertown Community School Districts were eligible for free and reduced meals during the academic year.<\/p>\n<p>In Allentown this summer, free grab-and-go meals were again available at Star Community Health\u2019s Sigal Center as part of the Summer Meals Program. Since its inception, the program has been supported by Hatzel &amp; Buehler, Inc., formerly known as West Side Hammer Electric.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAt St. Luke\u2019s, we believe that no child should suffer the consequences of hunger,\u201d said Bill Moyer, St. Luke\u2019s West Region President. \u201cEnsuring that every child has the nourishment they need to grow strong and stay healthy is fundamental to our commitment to community health.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In Quakertown, the Summer Meals program has received financial support from Penn Community Bank. This summer, meals were served at Free Fall Action Park (670 S. Main Street, Quakertown).<\/p>\n<p>Dennis Pfleiger, President of St. Luke\u2019s Upper Bucks and Quakertown campuses, said, \u201cThe Summer Meals Program is a critical investment in the health and future of our children.
