SkillsUSA held a competition where winners from one team will head to the state competition with hopes of reaching nationals.<\/em><\/p>\n

BETHLEHEM, PA<\/strong>\u00a0–\u00a0Northampton Community College (NCC) hosted the SkillsUSA\u00a0Welding\u00a0Fabrication\u00a0Competition at its Bethlehem campus on January 13. The competition, hosted at the College for the first time\u00a0this year,\u00a0is one of\u00a062\u00a0contests in a variety of career and technical fields.\u00a0Contests run the gamut from culinary and cosmetology to automotive and welding,\u00a0and they are\u00a0created and judged by industry professionals.<\/p>\n

The welding fabrication competition consisted of a written test\u00a0portion\u00a0and a hands-on\u00a0portion\u00a0where five teams consisting of three students each were given blueprints and information to build a tow hitch carrier in four hours. The goal was to make it a usable product at the end of the competition.<\/p>\n

The students represented Bethlehem Vocational Technical School (BAVTS), Lehigh Career & Technical Institute (LCTI), Career Institute of Technology (CIT), Monroe Career & Technical Institute (MCTI), and Upper Bucks County Technical School.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s a chance for these high school students to showcase their skills,\u201d says Andy Hammer, Executive Director SkillsUSA Council.<\/p>\n

Upper Bucks County Technical School\u2019s\u00a0Benjamin Kaczinski, Jayce Teman, and Coulton Meier\u00a0<\/strong>took home medals\u00a0and will be headed to\u00a0states\u00a0as the winners of this stage of the competition.\u00a0If they do well there,\u00a0they\u2019ll\u00a0head to the national conference in Atlanta, GA in June\u00a02026.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s\u00a0important to bring in students to\u00a0show them\u00a0what NCC could offer.\u00a0For example,\u00a0we’re\u00a0one of the few who have a robotic welder on the east coast,\u201d\u00a0says\u00a0Associate Dean, Automotive, Industry & Manufacturing, Ken Nasatka.\u00a0\u201cWe also partner with many of the schools to offer college credit for coursework completed upon their graduation.\u201d<\/p>\n

The remaining\u00a0contests will be held on February 4, in part, at\u00a0Agriculture\u00a0Hall\u00a0(Ag Hall) in Allentown,\u00a0with\u00a0a few\u00a0being held at NCC. Follow along with all things SkillsUSA at\u00a0https:\/\/www.skillsusa.org\/<\/a>.<\/p>\n
