Macungie, PA — Accreditation has always been important to The Hillside School, an independent K-8 school founded 34 years ago to help children with language-based learning disabilities reach their full potential.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe\u2019ve always been accredited through Middle States,\u201d said Donna Henry, Head of School. \u201cIt\u2019s something we take seriously and work diligently to accomplish.\u201d<\/p>\n

Recently, the school achieved reaccreditation through the Sustaining Excellence<\/em> protocol, which Henry said was a perfect fit for Hillside because of its focus on action research. Hillside\u2019s research is focusing on effective writing instruction for students with language-based learning disabilities.<\/p>\n

Additionally, the colloquium component required under Sustaining Excellence<\/em> fit with the school\u2019s goals.<\/p>\n

\u201cOne of our goals is not only to be a leader in the field of learning disabilities, but to also educate the broader community about them,\u201d Henry said.<\/p>\n

Students attending Hillside, located in Lower Macungie, Pa., come from over 20 school districts and nine counties. While bright and creative, Hillside student may experience a range of language-based disabilities.<\/p>\n

\u201cHillside students are intelligent children who learn differently than their peers and therefore need a different approach to match their learning style,\u201d Henry said.<\/p>\n

Hillside provides students differentiated and explicit, multi-sensory programs delivered in a small group setting of eight students per class. Students acquire the ability to understand their own unique learning needs and are challenged to learn \u201chow to learn.\u201d<\/p>\n

An emphasis on demystifying individual learning profiles and securing the tools and strategies essential for success as life-long learners are key to the Hillside mission.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhen we see students finally feel the joy in learning, that\u2019s the best,\u201d Henry said.<\/p>\n

\n

The Hillside School<\/a> is an independent school for students in kindergarten through 8th grade with language-based learning disabilities, such as dyslexia, dysgraphia and dyscalculia, as well as other disabilities that affect learning, i.e. auditory and visual processing disorders, working memory deficits, ADHD, sensory processing disorders.\u00a0 They provide explicit multi-sensory and differentiated instruction embedded with strategies that allow students to experience success.\u00a0 Through integrated academic experiences that focus on individual strengths, students acquire an understanding of learning as a process and utilize assistive technology to help surmount areas of weakness and to augment the curriculum.\u00a0 The nurturing environment of The Hillside School fosters self-awareness, builds self-esteem and promotes self-advocacy skills for use beyond their walls.<\/p>\n
