{"id":25216,"date":"2016-12-11T20:27:16","date_gmt":"2016-12-12T01:27:16","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.thevalleyledger.com\/?p=25216"},"modified":"2016-12-11T20:27:16","modified_gmt":"2016-12-12T01:27:16","slug":"chapin-family-brought-everything-holiday-concert-no-bananas","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.thevalleyledger.com\/?p=25216","title":{"rendered":"CHAPIN FAMILY BROUGHT EVERYTHING TO THEIR HOLIDAY CONCERT, BUT NO BANANAS"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.df-foto.com\/\" target=\"_blank\"><b>Concert Review By: Diane Fleischman<\/b><\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000; font-family: Cambria;\">The <a href=\"http:\/\/www.steelstacks.org\/visit\/dining\/musikfest-cafe\/\" target=\"_blank\">Musikfest Caf\u00e9 <\/a>was packed Friday night for the return of Tom Chapin and Family holiday concert.<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-family: Cambria;\">\u00a0 <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-family: Cambria;\">Many fans traveled from other states to catch this overflowing cornucopia of holiday songs, Harry Chapin classics, and songs from the next generation of Chapin artists, Jen Chapin, and The Chapin Sisters.<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-family: Cambria;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000; font-family: Cambria;\">A<a href=\"http:\/\/www.thechapinfamily.com\/\" target=\"_blank\"> Chapin family <\/a>concert wouldn\u2019t be complete without some presence of Harry Chapin, who passed away 35 years ago.<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-family: Cambria;\">\u00a0 <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-family: Cambria;\">The core of Harry Chapin\u2019s band remains intact as brothers Tom and Stephen Chapin took the stage followed by Big Jim Wallace on guitar and Howie Fields on drums. Ironically, this concert fell a couple days after of what would have been Harry Chapin\u2019s 74<\/span><sup><span style=\"color: #000000; font-family: Cambria; font-size: small;\">th<\/span><\/sup><span style=\"color: #000000; font-family: Cambria;\"> birthday, and it is apparent that the world still misses his folk based story telling songs today.<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-family: Cambria;\">\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-family: Cambria;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000; font-family: Cambria;\">Back in the seventies, Harry Chapin\u2019s heyday, what made his concerts enjoyable and completely fun was the amount of audience participation required , and the emotional antidotes contained within each song.<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-family: Cambria;\">\u00a0 <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-family: Cambria;\">As classic hits were performed, like \u201cW.O.L.D.\u201d and \u201cMr. Tanner\u201d,<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-family: Cambria;\">\u00a0 <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-family: Cambria;\">it became clear how Chapin\u2019s songs are still very much relevant today.<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-family: Cambria;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000; font-family: Cambria;\">Harry Chapin\u2019s daughter, Jen, was next on stage as she performed \u201cTangled Up Puppet\u201d, a song written by both Harry and Sandy Chapin, which revealed their some of their elations and frustrations of parenting, followed by \u201cFind Your Joy and Let it Show\u201d, a song Jen Chapin wrote for her son.<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-family: Cambria;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000; font-family: Cambria;\">To complete the ensemble, Tom Chapin\u2019s daughters,<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-family: Cambria;\">\u00a0 <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-family: Cambria;\">Abigail and Lily, known as The Chapin Sisters, sang a song penned by their father, \u201cSaturday Morning\u201d,<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-family: Cambria;\">\u00a0 <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-family: Cambria;\">followed by an Everly Brothers<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-family: Cambria;\">\u00a0 <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-family: Cambria;\">hit, \u201cDream\u201d.<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-family: Cambria;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000; font-family: Cambria;\">Rounding out the show with other Harry Chapin tunes were: \u201cI Wonder What Would Happen to This World\u201d, <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-family: Cambria;\">\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-family: Cambria;\">\u201cCats in the Cradle\u201d, \u201cTaxi\u201d, and \u201cThe Last Dance.\u201d One of Chapin\u2019s most popular songs, \u201c30,000 Pounds of Bananas\u201d, wasn\u2019t included in the set, which may have disappointed some devoted fans, but realistically ran a good 15 to 20 minutes on its own, and there was plenty more music in store.<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-family: Cambria;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000; font-family: Cambria;\">The audience was also in for a treat as Christmas classics were mixed in the set with rich harmonies such as \u201cHark, The Herald Angels Sing\u201d, <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-family: Cambria;\">\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-family: Cambria;\">\u201cIt Came Upon a Midnight Clear\u201d, which was arranged with hints of reggae, and\u201cMele Kalikimaka\u201d, while Jen Chapin covered \u201cOh Holy Night\u201d beautifully.<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-family: Cambria;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000; font-family: Cambria;\">Tom and Stephen Chapin took command of the stage equally.<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-family: Cambria;\">\u00a0 <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-family: Cambria;\">Stephen, the youngest brother, tours as the Steve Chapin Band, and Tom, now 71, has a full career from his start in The Chapins in the sixties, to the ABC educational show, \u201cMake A Wish\u201d, in the seventies, to working in musical theatre in the eighties, an accomplisher writer of children\u2019s songs in the nineties, to his last release, \u201c70\u201d, last year.<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;
