(<span data-term=\"goog_1984159733\">January 5, 2017<\/span>) \u2014 When Cedar Crest College was founded in 1867, the visionaries that saw a need to educate Allentown\u2019s young women might never have imagined what it would become <span data-term=\"goog_1984159734\">150 years later<\/span>. Today it is a premier college dedicated to educating the next generation of women leaders that prepares students for life in the global community, and has a growing school of adult and graduate education that serves both women and men.<\/p>\n<p><span data-term=\"goog_1984159735\">On Thursday<\/span> afternoon <span data-term=\"goog_1984159736\">January 19<\/span> the college will celebrate its sesquicentennial at a kick-off event entitled \u201cOn the Crest of the Future\u201d and will announce a series of special events taking place throughout 2017. (Snow date for the kick-off is <span data-term=\"goog_1984159737\">Wednesday, January 25<\/span>.)<\/p>\n<p>A reception with a celebratory sparkling cider toast given by President Carmen Twillie Ambar will be held in Canova Commons from <span data-term=\"goog_1984159738\">3 \u2013 4 p.m.<\/span>, followed by the Sesquicentennial Faculty Lecture Series from <span data-term=\"goog_1984159739\">4 \u2013 5 p.m.<\/span> in the 1867 Room. Known for its accomplished nursing program, the session\u2019s theme is \u201cNursing\u2019s Seat at the Global Table: Leading from Beside\u201d and will be presented by Dr. Wendy Robb, the Hazel and Walter May Nursing Endowed Chair. \u00a0(A speaker bio can be found here: <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cedarcrest.edu\/ca\/academics\/nursing\/90514_chair.shtm\" target=\"_blank\"><u>http:\/\/www.cedarcrest.edu\/ca\/<\/u>academics\/nursing\/90514_chair.shtm<\/a>) Attendees will also have the opportunity to contribute to the On the Crest of the Future Community Art Project during the event.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;As we enter our 150th year, we do so with the intent of building a stronger, more profound community, one prepared for the dynamism of the higher education landscape in the next century,\u201d said President Carmen Twillie Ambar. \u201cWe are excited to welcome the community to Cedar Crest throughout this yearlong celebration.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Other \u201cOn the Crest of the Future\u201d 2017 event highlights include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span data-term=\"goog_1984159740\">March 24<\/span> &#8211; Cedar Crest will host \u201cVisualizing Higher Education in 2027 &#8211; A Conference Exploring the Future of Higher Education\u201d for which it will invite the higher education community to gather and explore how today\u2019s issues will shape their institutions in the next decade. With prominent speakers and breakout sessions covering a variety of topics, the conference is meant for educators, administrators and students.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.cedarcrest.edu\/150\/VHE_conference.shtm\" target=\"_blank\"><u>http:\/\/www.cedarcrest.edu\/150\/<\/u>VHE_conference.shtm<\/a><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span data-term=\"goog_1984159741\">October 5<\/span> &#8211; journalist and broadcaster Lisa Ling will be the featured speaker at Cedar Crest\u2019s Reimert Lecture Series.<\/li>\n<li><span data-term=\"goog_1984159742\">October 20<\/span> &#8211; the college will host its 150<sup>th<\/sup> All-Class Reunion and Gala with special family activities, and a lecture and reception with Dr. Afaf I. Meleis.<\/li>\n<li>Ongoing &#8211; The On the Crest of the Future Community Art Project is also part of the yearlong celebration. Cedar Crest Art Professor Jill Odegaard is working with students, alumni and the general public to make custom-designed paper on which they can share a special memory of the college or a hope for its future.
