DAY<\/span><\/b><b><span style=\"font-size: 11.0pt; font-family: 'Arial',sans-serif;\"><br \/>\n<strong><span style=\"font-family: 'Arial',sans-serif;\">Family friendly art making, live music, poetry, film, and more\u00a0 <\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/b><span style=\"font-size: 11.0pt; font-family: 'Arial',sans-serif;\"><br \/>\n<u><\/u><u><\/u><\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"font-size: 11.0pt; font-family: 'Arial',sans-serif;\">Allentown, PA\u2014<\/span><\/strong><span style=\"font-size: 11.0pt; font-family: 'Arial',sans-serif;\"><span class=\"aBn\" tabindex=\"0\" data-term=\"goog_304869428\"><span class=\"aQJ\">January 16, 2017<\/span><\/span>, marks the 88th birthday of civil rights leader Martin Luther King Jr., whose message of equal rights for all and determination in the face of adversity is as important today as it was during the Civil Rights Movement of the 1960s. \u201cMartin Luther King Day is a day for the community to come together, to reflect on how far we have come, and to consider what milestones we have yet to meet,\u201d says the Museum\u2019s new Department of Public Engagement manager, Dianne Smith. In honor of this great man and his legacy, <b>the Allentown Art Museum of the Lehigh Valley will be open free on <span class=\"aBn\" tabindex=\"0\" data-term=\"goog_304869429\"><span class=\"aQJ\">Monday, January 16<\/span><\/span>, from <span class=\"aBn\" tabindex=\"0\" data-term=\"goog_304869430\"><span class=\"aQJ\">11 a.m. to 5 p.m.<\/span><\/span><\/b> The community is invited to enjoy the following free family friendly activities:<u><\/u><u><\/u><\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"font-size: 11.0pt; font-family: 'Arial',sans-serif;\"><span class=\"aBn\" tabindex=\"0\" data-term=\"goog_304869431\"><span class=\"aQJ\">noon\u20132:30 p.m.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/strong><b><span style=\"font-size: 11.0pt; font-family: 'Arial',sans-serif;\"><br \/>\n<strong><span style=\"font-family: 'Arial',sans-serif;\">Story Station<\/span><\/strong><br \/>\n<strong><span style=\"font-family: 'Arial',sans-serif;\">Frank Lloyd Wright Library<\/span><\/strong><br \/>\n<\/span><\/b><span style=\"font-size: 11.0pt; font-family: 'Arial',sans-serif;\">Add your voice to the Museum\u2019s growing archive of personal narratives. Staff will lead you through a reflective exercise designed to create a short piece of storytelling art inspired by the words of Dr. King. Each session is expected to take about twenty minutes and can accommodate up to five people. Nzadi Keita<\/span><\/strong><br \/>\n<strong><span style=\"font-family: 'Arial',sans-serif;\">Rodale Classroom<\/span><\/strong><b><br \/>\n<\/b>Poet\u00a0and writer M. Nzadi Keita presents a dynamic talk about how individuals can play a role in our changing society, even in the face of overwhelming odds. She will read from her recently released book <em><span style=\"font-family: 'Arial',sans-serif;\">Brief Evidence of Heaven: Poems from the Life of Anna Murray Douglass<\/span><\/em>, which illustrates how the wife of Fredrick Douglass&#8211;a resourceful, uneducated black woman&#8211;supported the anti-slavery movement. M. Nzadi Keita\u2019s work has appeared in <em><span style=\"font-family: 'Arial',sans-serif;\">Bum Rush the Page: A Def Poetry Jam<\/span><\/em> and elsewhere, and she served as an adviser to the documentary <em><span style=\"font-family: 'Arial',sans-serif;\">BaddDDD Sonia Sanchez<\/span><\/em>.<u><\/u><u><\/u><\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"font-size: 11.0pt; font-family: 'Arial',sans-serif;\"><span class=\"aBn\" tabindex=\"0\" data-term=\"goog_304869434\"><span class=\"aQJ\">3 p.m.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/strong><b><span style=\"font-size: 11.0pt; font-family: 'Arial',sans-serif;\"><br \/>\n<strong><span style=\"font-family: 'Arial',sans-serif;\">Film: <\/span><\/strong><em><span style=\"font-family: 'Arial',sans-serif;\">Free Angela and All Political Prisoners<\/span><\/em><strong><span style=\"font-family: 'Arial',sans-serif;\"> (2012, 102 minutes)<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/b><span style=\"font-size: 11.0pt; font-family: 'Arial',sans-serif;\"><br \/>\n<strong><span style=\"font-family: 'Arial',sans-serif;\">Rodale Classroom<\/span><\/strong><br \/>\nIn this documentary, activist Angela Davis speaks about her 1970s imprisonment as a terrorist and conspirator, which became a flashpoint in the black liberation struggle and turned her into a revolutionary icon.<u><\/u><u><\/u><\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"font-size: 11.0pt; font-family: 'Arial',sans-serif;\"><span class=\"aBn\" tabindex=\"0\" data-term=\"goog_304869435\"><span class=\"aQJ\">3:30\u20134:30 p.m.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/strong><b><span style=\"font-size: 11.0pt; font-family: 'Arial',sans-serif;\"><br \/>\n<strong><span style=\"font-family: 'Arial',sans-serif;\">The Diane Monroe Quartet<\/span><\/strong><br \/>\n<strong><span style=\"font-family: 'Arial',sans-serif;\">Auditorium<\/span><\/strong><br \/>\n<\/span><\/b><span style=\"font-size: 11.0pt; font-family: 'Arial',sans-serif;\">The Diane Monroe Quartet captures the spirit of the Civil Rights Movement through their known songs of protest and moving, original compositions. The group appeared at the Kennedy Center\u2019s Women in Jazz Festival in 2012 among many other venues.<u><\/u><u><\/u><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 11.0pt; font-family: 'Arial',sans-serif;\">As a bonus, visitors will have the rare opportunity to view the prints <em><span style=\"font-family: 'Arial',sans-serif;\">Head Study<\/span><\/em> (2002) by John Wilson and <em><span style=\"font-family: 'Arial',sans-serif;\">As Free and Independent States<\/span><\/em> (2009) by Faith Ringgold, both of which depict Dr. King and his work. The prints will be on view for this day only.<u><\/u><u><\/u><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 11.0pt; font-family: 'Arial',sans-serif;\">Also on view are the Museum\u2019s special exhibitions for the fall and winter season. <em><span style=\"font-family: 'Arial',sans-serif;\">Allentown x7<\/span><\/em> features commissioned works from seven local artists; <em><span style=\"font-family: 'Arial',sans-serif;\">Building Bridges<\/span><\/em>, a photographic depiction of the community\u2019s perspectives of Allentown; <em><span style=\"font-family: 'Arial',sans-serif;\">Anthony Viscardi: Shadow Landings<\/span><\/em>, a monumental three-dimensional mural; and <em><span style=\"font-family: 'Arial',sans-serif;\">Warren Rohrer: The Language of Mark Making<\/span><\/em>, an exploration of the work of this Philadelphia-based abstract painter.<br \/>\n<\/span>\u00a0<u><\/u><u><\/u><\/p>\n<p><em>The Allentown Art Museum is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization that participates in the cultural, educational, and economic life of the Lehigh Valley.
