April 7, Bethlehem, Pa. \u2013 Amy Zanelli, candidate for Lehigh County Commissioner District 3, joined Pennsylvania State Senator Lisa Boscola and three female elected officials who urged students at Moravian College to \u201cbe bold,\u201d get involved, and think about running for office.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n \u201cAmerica is still really, really uncomfortable with women as strong, intelligent, powerful leaders,\u201d Zanelli told students.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n \u201cIn the Senate there are 7 women out of 50 senators. We used to have 11, so we are going backwards,\u201d Boscola said.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n Zanelli and Boscola were among 5 panelists who spoke Thursday night about their decision to run for office, the opposition they encountered when they challenged a male dominated field of seasoned politicians and how their determination and focus have challenged the perception that women cannot be strong leaders. Clinton, NJ Mayor Janice Kovach, Bethlehem School Board Member Karen Beck Pooley and Stroudsburg, PA school board member Judith Magann also spoke about the benefits of having diverse representation at all levels of government.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n Zanelli\u2019s campaign goes into high gear with $5 Friday.<\/span>\u00a0 <\/span>\u201cDon\u2019t think that little things don\u2019t make a difference. That\u2019s how Bernie raised all his money and it worked. So once a week, instead of buying a latte, give it to her. Let\u2019s get her in office.<\/span>\u00a0 <\/span>If you want to break the glass ceiling, pay attention to your dollars,\u201d Zanelli said.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n \u201cYou can\u2019t win these offices anymore without raising money,\u201d Boscola said. And when it comes to raising money, women have a hard time raising money for themselves, she added.
