{"id":30859,"date":"2017-04-21T16:26:25","date_gmt":"2017-04-21T20:26:25","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.thevalleyledger.com\/?p=30859"},"modified":"2018-04-26T22:34:49","modified_gmt":"2018-04-27T02:34:49","slug":"allentown-parks-host-large-scale-cleanup-efforts","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.thevalleyledger.com\/?p=30859","title":{"rendered":"ALLENTOWN PARKS TO HOST LARGE SCALE CLEANUP EFFORTS"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The City of Allentown Department of Parks &amp; Recreation in partnership with Friends of the Allentown Parks is hosting more than 3,000 volunteers participating in cleanups in 29 city parks and public spaces on <span data-term=\"goog_724142577\">Sunday, April 30<\/span> as part of the #LoveLehighValley initiative.<\/p>\n<p>The Department of Parks and Recreation maintains 2,000+ acres of parkland in 43 parks, with 35 miles of trails.\u00a0 Volunteer projects assist with this monumental task to keep Allentown\u2019s parks looking beautiful.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI can\u2019t thank the Friends of the Allentown Parks enough,\u201d said Mayor Ed Pawlowski.\u00a0 \u201cThey have organized an army of dedicated volunteers that will be working in parks in every section of the city.\u00a0 We have great community partners in Allentown and the Friends are a prime example.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAllentown\u2019s parks are the gem of the city, and maintaining them to the highest level is one of our priorities. Volunteer cleanup projects allow the Parks staff to be able to dedicate more time to improvement and renovation projects,\u201d said Department of Parks &amp; Recreation Director Lindsay L. Taylor.\u00a0 \u201cWe are fortunate to have a dedicated group in Friends of the Allentown Parks who actively engage the community to assist with keeping our park system looking its best.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Friends of the Allentown Parks, a non-profit organization dedicated to the protection, care and promotion of Allentown\u2019s parks system, has coordinated more than 3,000 volunteers to conduct cleanup projects in 29 locations:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>5<sup>th<\/sup> St. Playground<\/li>\n<li>Andre Reed (Irving) Park<\/li>\n<li>Bucky Boyle Park<\/li>\n<li>Canal Park<\/li>\n<li>Cedar Creek Parkway<\/li>\n<li>Daddona Lake &amp; Terrace (Union Terrace Park)<\/li>\n<li>Fellowship East Playlot (2<sup>nd<\/sup> &amp; Hamilton sts.)<\/li>\n<li>Fountain Park<\/li>\n<li>Franklin Park<\/li>\n<li>Ithaca Playlot<\/li>\n<li>Jackson St. Park<\/li>\n<li>Jordan Meadows<\/li>\n<li>Jordan Park<\/li>\n<li>Juniata Playlot<\/li>\n<li>Keck Park<\/li>\n<li>Kimmet\u2019s Lock<\/li>\n<li>Lehigh Parkway<\/li>\n<li>Lil\u2019-Le-Hi Trout Nursery<\/li>\n<li>Lumber\/Benton St. Playlot<\/li>\n<li>Mack Pool<\/li>\n<li>Mountainville Memorial<\/li>\n<li>Percy Ruhe Park<\/li>\n<li>Roosevelt Park<\/li>\n<li>Salisbury Drive Playlot<\/li>\n<li>South Mountain Reservoir<\/li>\n<li>South Street Playlot<\/li>\n<li>Trexler Park<\/li>\n<li>Trout Creek Parkway<\/li>\n<li>Walking Purchase Park<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Participating community organizations include Faith Church, First Presbyterian Church of Allentown, the Allentown Library Neighborhood Association, Starbucks Coffee Company and Salisbury Township Environmental Advisory Council. Special thanks for cooperation with Salisbury Township and Lehigh County.<\/p>\n<p>In 2016, more than 1,700 volunteers were engaged in a similar cleanup effort.
