Allentown, Pa. (Aug. 25, 2017) \u2014Muhlenberg College\u2019s Theatre & Dance Department announces the 2017-2018 Mainstage season. Running from September through April, the season features six theatrical productions and three dance concerts, including several world premieres.<\/p>\n
The season begins Sept. 27 with \u201cNew Voices \/ New Visions\u201d Part 1.<\/strong> Three talented senior directing students will take the helm for an evening of visionary, experimental theater. The evening includes two world premieres: \u201cHow I Wonder,\u201d by Ashley Malafronte \u201917 and Kate O\u2019Donoghue \u201917, directed by Drew Maidment \u201918; and \u201cIn Finite Potential,\u201d by Esther Kruman \u201918, directed by Peri Ganbarg \u201918. Also on the program: \u201c187\u201d by Jos\u00e9 Rivera and \u201cShadow Day\u201d by Steven Dietz, both directed by Genevieve Wall \u201918. The production runs Sept. 27 \u2013 Oct. 2 in the Studio Theatre.<\/p>\n \u201cSunday in the Park with George,\u201d<\/strong> Stephen Sondheim\u2019s longing, luminous musical, celebrates creative genius and the magical, excruciating process of making art. Two artists, centuries apart, strive to realize their artistic vision and create something new \u2014 without losing hold of the people they love. James Peck will direct this Pulitzer Prize-winning musical Oct. 27 \u2013 Nov. 5 on the Empie Theatre stage.<\/p>\n \u201cMoving Stories\u201d<\/strong> will feature original dance works by student choreographers, Nov. 9-11 in the Baker Theatre. The dance concert presents dance as narrative storytelling and addresses themes as diverse as the choreographers\u2019 own backgrounds.<\/p>\n \u201cNew Voices \/ New Visions\u201d Part 2<\/strong> is the second of two evenings in which talented senior directing students create ambitious and intriguing theatre. The evening features \u201cConform,\u201d by Joseph McNaney \u201917, directed by Irene Martinko \u201918; and \u201cThe Bald Soprano,\u201d by iconic French playwright Eug\u00e9ne Ionesco, directed by Brydon Geisler \u201918. The production runs Nov. 29 \u2013 Dec. 3 in the Studio Theatre.<\/p>\n \u201cMaster Choreographers\u201d<\/strong> offers a spectacular evening of ballet, contemporary, tap, and jazz dance, showcasing exciting new works by nationally and internationally acclaimed guest artists and faculty. This season\u2019s edition features a piece by critically acclaimed choreographer Tiffany Mills, who serves as the 2017-2018 Baker Artist-in-Residence, supported by the Dexter F. & Dorothy H. Baker Foundation. This highly anticipated dance concert runs Feb. 8-10 in the Empie Theatre.<\/p>\n Alfred Jarry\u2019s outlandish political satire \u201cUbu Roi\u201d<\/strong> ranks among the essential works of avant-garde theater. Directed by Francine Roussel, this absurd but trenchant farce about a capricious tyrant runs Feb. 21-25 in the Studio Theatre.<\/p>\n \u201cGlory,\u201d<\/strong> written and directed by Holly Cate, is a passionate swashbuckling tale of political intrigue and violence, adapted from Shakespeare\u2019s Henry VI tetralogy. Presented here in its world premiere, \u201cGlory\u201d relates the story of conflict between two competing houses that eventually erupted into the War of the Roses, one of the bloodiest periods of English history. Featuring a faculty spotlight performance by Troy Dwyer, the production runs April 5-8 in the Baker Theatre.<\/p>\n Student choreographers showcase their ideas and talents in \u201cDance Emerge,\u201d<\/strong> April 18 \u2013 21 in the Studio Theatre.<\/p>\n The season concludes with \u201cfor colored girls who have considered suicide \/ when the rainbow is enuf.\u201d<\/strong> Ntozake Shange\u2019s critically acclaimed choreopoem combines music, poetry, and improvisational dance into a story of strength, resiliency, and celebration. Sharrell D. Luckett directs the production, featuring guest musician Rahbi Hines.
